Malvern House

Our clients brief was to create a contemporary addition to this traditional Federation home whilst maintaining and enhancing the original features at the front. Situated in Melbourne's renown 'Gascoigne Estate', respecting and enhancing the historic facade of the home was paramount.
The contemporary addition was celebrated by creating a deliberate threshold from old to new at the end of the hallway. Opening into the vast open plan living space at the rear where floor to ceiling aluminium windows frame the view to the garden and pool beyond whilst allowing plenty of natural light to flood in.
The vast yet sleek kitchen is super functional with plenty of storage, substantial work surfaces and a breakfast bench for busy family life and relaxed entertaining. The combined butlers pantry and laundry, adjoining the kitchen behind a sliding door is easily hidden away when friends come to visit. Also in this central hub, a study area is integrated into the living room, both of which are contemporary & practical in style.
This project was designed in collaboration with building designer Peter Jackson, with all joinery design, detail & finishes created by Austin Design throughout.
