Altair Apartment

Housed within Altair, one of Sydney's most iconic residential buildings, Allied_Office's renovation has transformed this apartment into a unique and contemporary living space.

Designed by renowned architects Engelen Moore, Sydney's Altair is one of the city's architectural icons, recognised in the 2001 World Architectural Awards as 'the best residential block in the world'. Comprising 139 apartments over 16 levels, Altair is positioned on the ridge line above Rushcutters Bay, boasting captivating views of the harbour, city and surrounding suburbs.

The transformation of Altair Apartment by Andrew Macdonald of Allied_Office (previously MiArchitects) involved a complete redesign. The intent was to control the cross ventilation from both the northern and southern aspects. The existing narrow layout was redesigned, opening up the corridor with the introduction of curved oak panelling to enhance the spatial flow and fluidity of the space. The bathrooms were renovated, a new kitchen was added, the ceilings were completely stripped out and services were tidied.

The north facing aspect made the interior of the apartment very bright, therefore the ceiling was painted in a dark chocolate finish, creating a softer and more relaxed mood. The use of light natural timber tones paired with marble accents and perforated golden metal details added a touch of contemporary elegance to the space whilst providing a unique contrast against the dark ceiling.

By redesigning the interior layout of the apartment and utilising contemporary material and colour palettes, Allied_Office have perfectly balanced light and shade to create a comfortably modern living space.
