Middle Park Residence
Design: Conrad Architects / Build: Cobild / Photography: Sharyn Cairns
The transformation of this Edwardian style house by Conrad Architects is the ultimate tribute to understated luxury, striking the perfect balance between old and new to create an elegant family home located in Melbourne's outer-city suburb of Middle Park.
At the beginning of the renovation, the house was in an unliveable condition having not been updated for forty years. Therefore, the majority of the original residence was demolished, whilst notable heritage components—such as the front façade, front chimney and front section of the roof—were kept intact. The home's new floor plan now includes an additional storey, three bedrooms, formal and informal living areas, an open-plan kitchen with scullery, laundry, study and rear garage with a studio.
In order to meet the client's brief of a high-end contemporary aesthetic with a seamless connection between new and old, Conrad Architects reinvented the residence's heritage in a modern way. Period-inspired architectural features included in the design—such as hallway arches and arched ceiling cornices—were reimagined with a fresh perspective whilst remaining respectful of the building's history.
The home's interior demonstrates purposeful restraint, ensuring the ultimate level of understated elegance. A neutral colour palette and refined detailing brighten the interior, avoiding any clichéd renditions of luxury. In addition to the primarily white and grey monochromatic colour scheme, marble accents were utilised throughout the house, providing character and texture within the space. Furnishings and accessories featuring gentle curves reflect the structural details, creating a cohesive dialogue between the home's architecture and interior design.
Middle Park Residence is a prime example of Conrad Architects' ability to blend classic and contemporary architecture. Remaining respectful of the home's heritage, Conrad Architects paired Edwardian inspired architecture with refined details and restrained tones to create a new level of understated luxury.
