Hurren Architects

Hills Hideaway Project

Old stone cottages, while full of charm and character, often lack the space and functionality required of modern day living.

As you can see in this restoration and extension Hurren Architects thrive on the opportunity to combine the attributes of traditional and modern living to create a new life for older dwellings.

This house originally began as a 2 bedroom structure with basic wet areas. The dwelling has been extended to present a four bedroom retreat hidden within the hills of Adelaide.

Removing stone walls, building of additional rooms and a garden transformation was just the beginning of the work completed by Hurren Architects.

Stone was sourced locally from Basket Range arriving on site as large boulders, split and dressed by experienced stonemasons to maintain the look and feel of the original building. Interior walls have been treated with a smooth undulating render and many traditional building techniques were used to link the old with the new.

While this renovation took place in the late 1990’s its form and structure is timeless and still relevant today.
