Hurren Architects

Seaside Getaway Project

Located along the Fleurieu coastline, with views from Goolwa through to Victor Harbor, the original family cottage had taken a beating from the elements.

The brief to Hurren Architects was to create a new family getaway with a natural patina that reflected links to the past. Capturing views and ensuring the home could withstand the elements were high priorities, along with the need for easy maintenance and the inclusion of the large Norfolk Island pine trees already located on the site.

To take advantage of the location, the original cottage was bulldozed to make way for a new family retreat. Linking the new build to the past, roof lines pay homage to the old family cottage and the farmhouse style of the outbuildings reference the original farming purpose of the site.

Sandstone was the material chosen for the main building to create a feeling of strength and permanence against the elements. Colour matching to local stones featured in the landscaping, the sandstone is also used through out the house to create connection.

Care has been taken to provide areas of shelter from the elements across the home with the creation of the children’s courtyard and winter deck, while the use of glass captures views and ensures light filters through the space.
