Advice re colourbond - light or dark for energy saving?
Comments (41)Gal will go grey (mid to dark grey) over 12 - 18 months. Initially VERY bright. The energy absorbed changes accordingly, from sub 5% absorbed to ~35%. Zinc maintains brightness for longer, though still suffers some dulling. Say 5% to 15% over time. This can be avoided by coating with a product called 'Sharkhide' metal protectant, used to stop aluminium boats oxidising. For there reasons many councils will not allow zinc or gal roofing (visual amenity, reflection issues), while making the houses more prone to requiring summer aircon at the same time. Surfmist Colorbond starts around 9% absorbed. If purely for energy reasons, a light colour might be the only option. If going dark, I would suggest at least doing the 'less aesthetically important' sides and rear in a light colour. Your call. If you go all dark, ensure you have good roof space ventilation for the summer that can be closed in the winter, and lots of well installed ceiling level insulation. Spray foam is more reliable over time than batts, see Spray It Solutions or similar (they have the Formaldahyde free Canadian Icenene foam)....See MoreNeed advice about roof space ventilation
Comments (13)I'd be going back to the architect/designer and asking why the vent wasn't on the plans then armed with that info, I'd be asking your Turkey of a Supervisor why if it wasn't on the plans he didn't flag and insist on being given the EXACT code that he's referencing (including the details so that you can review yourself) as last time you checked YOU WERE THE CLIENT - It's a shame you've had this happen - your home looks as though it will be stunning, but others have said it wont be so noticeable when the building is done completely. The placement kind of makes sense since heat rises so you'd want it to be as close to the highest point for maximum effectiveness but you should have been aware. Check on the builders itemized estimate to make sure that you didn't miss it by accident so that if you did accidentally miss that one line item on a list of a million you able to prepare your argument accordingly....See MoreWeatherboard Makeover: What Would You Do?
Comments (20)Thank you for these colours Lesley! I MUST put a verandah though - the front garden is heavenly - 9 metres to the front with roses and fruit trees (though it looks rough here) and is high up opposite a park for a view. I plan to play guitar here of an evening and add more white, blue & purple flowers to the middle and a pergola with climbing roses for a Moon Garden....See MoreContemporary render with Woodland grey
Comments (7)Thanks again dreamer. Big reader: thank you, pragmatic advice. Certainly in need of maintenance and we will likely sell the house in next 2 years. I got surfmist, shale grey and dune samples pots to try. Surfmist and Dune were too contrasting considering the surrounding trees. Actually shale grey looked quite good, but again, a lot more brighter. So likely we will stick with Hildegard...See Moredreamer
