Exterior colour scheme with terracotta tiles

Hi all

I’m wanting to change the exterior colour scheme of this 1950s style weatherboard so that it is modernised but also blends in better with more Australian native surrounds (which will come with some landscaping…and removing the red woodchips)

Due to budget I can’t change the terracotta roof or the porch quarry (?) tiles, so it needs to work in with them. However the roof is not ’full on’ terracotta due to weathering and I am planning to somehow make the porch tiles look more like recycled brick so that’ll tone them down a touch.

I very much dislike cream and heritage red (just personal preferences) and I’m drawn to whites/greys/greiges/ charcoals/blacks but also think greys that are too cool can look bluish with those red floor/roof tiles

Would love your advice!

Everything that is Mission Brown , I'd repaint in charcoal , including the gutters . That's it .

If you go and have a look at Homes to Love on Insta etc you’ll see a couple of houses that have terracotta tile roofs and have been fabulously updated. Including one with all white gutters, fascia and boards which is not something I would have considered but it looks great. I’d avoid grey at all costs.

Is there part of the house we can't see? Where is your front door? Just the double frontage like that is plain, but that was the style and not much you can do about it. The homes you are looking at do have a lot of features with opportunities to bring in other colours but there is nowhere with yours to do that and if you try it usually cheapens it. If you take the triple fronted house you posted, I would do the lighter green on the weatherboard and the deeper green like they have used on the window frames, I would do for the baseboards and the front door. I would keep the window frames and eaves white and paint the guttering to match the roof. Are you country? Are here any water issues for the garden? Instead of trying to do something with the house, I think I would be inclined to give it all a cottagy look with a picket front fence, nice entrance, a lush lawn and lots of plants for colour and lushness. The dark green baseboard will be a nice background for some small shrubs in front of the house. Weatherboards really lend themselves to that look. Don't forget the addition of old tyre swans - lol I notice you have small awnings over the windows - maybe replace them with some striped canvas ones in greens and terracotta - if you can get the combination. I used duck egg white on the whole house including eaves and Monument on windows and black trim and railings. Mine is a mid century boxy style but has added textures. I’m very happy with this colour scheme but I probably need to see a picture of yours or even just a style. Works for me, but might not suit yours.

Speaking of the gate, what do you think would be the best colour for the side gate we're putting here? It will be a double swing aluminium slat gate, and I'd imagined using timber-look slats because I love timber and we'll be using a lot of it inside the house. But now I'm not so sure whether it would look unbalanced, and what colour would work here. This is a battleaxe block so this gate will be the first thing you see as you're coming down the driveway. I'm planning to have a magnolia in a pot between the garage door and the gate. And thanks so much to everyone for the help, btw!

You have a fantastic period home and the colours you have selected are following contemporary fashion trends. However your terracotta tiled roof and chimneys are very orange, and the greys you have selected will make them see even more orange. I would be looking to the grey/greens to counterbalance the strength of the terracotta. Just remember that the fashionable greys of today are the daggy mission browns of tomorrow, especially when used on a period home like yours. This is why the current colour scheme looks so bad - as it is not original and was probably done in the 1980's. Don’t touch tiles. Paint the mission a warm grey and the path darker. Add natural mulch to garden. You can add a carpet runner on your porch if you want to tone it down.

I would embrace the terracotta, as bigreader said, painting the house white would look fabulous, you could add a touch of black to gutters to give a lift or not, terracotta, white and black looks amazing, add chairs in black , black planters against the terracotta tiles.. gorgeous, update the planting, and paint your outdoor canvas blinds to match. Could look stunning.

Hey there,

I love the terracotta!

I would paint the house a white with a warm grey undertone to freshen it up but compliment the warmth too, a deeper neutral white will achieve this.

I would paint the surround a deep chestnut brown to highlight your plantings - gutters same colour.

Put in a caramel accent, perhaps with a timber door, planted caramel pots by the door.

I would carry the white over your trim, to highlight the garden rather than the posts and hand rail.

This might not be quite the colour scheme you mentioned, but if you surround the terracotta with a monochromatic look (especially with cold or stark undertones), those tiles will be all you see!

Best to work with them to calm them down - In my opinion :)
