The transition from deep cabinets to shallow here was done to allow easy passage to the basement. However it is deceiving. The wine refrigerator and cabinetry above and to the right is actually recessed into an alcove in the garage.

Notice that the plug moulding on the underside of the wall cabinets leaves the backsplash free of outlets.

Popping out the cabinet over the microwave/exhaust breaks up the straight run, and makes the projection of the microwave look less out of place.

The recently completed kitchen is still waiting for two stools at this counter. You can see how the recessed cabinetry on the left eases the passage to the basement door.

This alcove, recessed into the garage is not full-height because of the garage door tracks. So we trick the eye. See the next photo.

While the space was short, the doors are full-height. A matching panel above the alcove keeps the secret.
