This beautiful home in Villanova had a very traditional cherry kitchen that was small for the size of the room. The homeowner wanted to open up the kitchen to the family room. This entailed switching the dining room and family room furniture. The load-bearing wall between the new family room and kitchen was removed. The adjacent laundry, which was quite cut up with walls in strange locations, was opened up and a large mudroom created. The new kitchen floor plan required shortening several windows in order to maximize the counter space.

The white cabinets are from UltraCraft, the island is from Brookhaven, the laundry cabinets are Fabuwood, and the mudroom is a custom-built unit. All of the counters are Viatera Rococo.

This glass cabinet is directly opposite the family room. The lighted interior accents the stemware and adds light to the space between the Sub-Zero wine refrigerator and the tall pantry cabinet. This is the perfect place to set up drinks for a party.

Base cabinet rollouts make accessing items much easier. Notice the plug moulding under the wall cabinet. This eliminates unsightly plugs in the backsplash.

The angle in the island adds visual interest while providing proper passage between the Sub-Zero refrigerator and island. Notice the 1" beveled edge is on the counter and the sink openings. The room in the distance used to be the family room, but is now the dining room.

The new family room now opens up to the kitchen thanks to the large doorway in the load-bearing wall.

The Sub-Zero refrigerator is recessed into what was a closet. The trim work makes it look right at home.

These three windows and the window to the left were full-length before (see before photos). The windows overlook the driveway and street, so the cook can see when the family is home.

The laundry cabinets have a designated spot for the dog and cat food as well as litter box.

This space used to be a hallway. Where the small table is was the door to the new family room. That was closed off and the large opening made between the family room and the kitchen. Removing the wall between the hallway and kitchen (see floor transition) opened up the kitchen even more.

The soffit did have ductwork and plumbing in it. By locating the tall pantry and wine refrigerator in key locations, we were able to mask these items and eliminate the soffit. The wall the range is on will go away.
