Philadelphia (Chestnut Hill) by Molly

This historic home in the Germantown section of Philadelphia received a huge makeover. The kitchen was just one part of it, one in which I was excited to participate. Shiny glass, rough oak, bleached teak, zinc, pastel paint, and muted shades of grey all blend to create a calm oasis in the heart of this home.

The charging station/message center sits right inside the main door of the home. The counter here is made of zinc, as well as the crown moulding.

The long and narrow house has this passage running from back to front. The original front door is seen in the distance. Because of this main passage, the homeowner was reluctant to have the doors of this tall cabinet open into the walkway. See in other shots how we handled that.

This shot shows the left door slid over to the right, exposing the left half of the cabinet. Pegboard in the back of the cabinet allows pots to be hung. Adjustable shelves make organization a breeze.

The right side of the cabinet telescopes out to the right, allowing full access without blocking the passage. The back of this section also has pegboard and adjustable shelves for flexible storage needs.

The remote control for the exhaust fan is by the light switch to the left of the cooktop. The portable control sticks to the wall magnetically and therefore can be operated from anywhere in the kitchen.

The thick walls of the old home have angled window surrounds. Small zinc shelves to the left and right hold coffee mugs and the toaster oven.

This 18" deep cabinet has the shelves cut back to normal wall-cabinet depth, allowing room for this adjustable rack on the door.

The "interior" part of the kitchen has painted cabinets and the "exterior" has rough-sawn Euro-oak cabinetry. This end of the island houses a kessebohmer pantry pull-out, perfect for the liquor.
