300 X 400 will mean everything is in rug. Is that ok??

You don’t need to put all the legs of the furniture on the rug. You can just have the front legs. But yes the 3x4. Too many people select too small of a rug.

That size means I must put all on rug else the furniture will be too far away from each other. But nervous it'll be too big. Other question - do I butt it up against fire mantle? This will mean therell be nearly 1.2 m gap between couch and cabinet on wall.

Measure the floor space that your furniture covers now. That is the size floor rug you want. Easy.

Longest side from door to door, then your furniture will be on the rug. Shortest side from fire to kitchen.

Going by the photos I agree that long across the room, I would also step it back from the fireplace if space allows.

I want to ask you if the lounge would work across the room in front of the entrance to the kitchen dining perhaps with a narrow sofa table behind it.. I notice that you have the lounge on a slight angle which I think is for watching the TV.

Hi siriuskey. Thanks so much. Yes I did think butted up against fire wouldn't work. For last 5 years I had sofa as you suggested but I didn't find it very good for socialising. I'd end up with guests on couch and me sitting on small stool in front of fire.

I think the Manhattan is better quality will wear better, easier to clean and the stripes would run across the room?

I think siriuskey mentioned having couch facing fireplace with your chairs either side, could look beautiful now you have larger rug. Run coffee table same as couch.

Thanks to all who helped my choice and placement of rug. Ive another question. I think it looks a bit small and would like to move the rug to be half under the couch or the chairs, however, this means will not be centred in front of fireplace. Does this matter? And if I do move it, which direction should I move it in? It currently looks like I'm trying to squeeze ALL furniture onto it. Should I move everything out? THANK YOU

Centre the rug oriented to what is the focal of the room - in this case the fireplace. Then place the furniture for functionality- some pieces may be only partially on the rug which is fine. You have a good room.

Agree, not all your furniture needs to be fully on the rug, just pull them back a little to open up your space, love the rug.
