Thanks for the great thoughts asquithoatley and Damien. I especially like the suggestions that I add a bit of colour and texture with cushions and lamps. I really favour a natural and organic palette, but having largely achieved that, the room just didn't seem to 'pop' in quite the way I'd hoped. Asquithoatley - are you able to give me a source for the red lamp? I really like it. It is funny you mention knitted pillows, as I just took up knitting for the first time in years and I did some for upstairs. They look really good. Maybe I'll get the knitting needles out again! And I'll start looking around at coffee tables. I think you are right. Thanks again to both of you. Isn't this site fantastic?

Hi Ellen, No, you are not asking too much! With a well-designed piece of joinery you should be easily able to get all your needs met. To complement your Danish scheme, you just need to use the right materials & colours. Here's an example of an entertainment/storage unit I did for some clients. It serves multi-functions in a not very large space.

A glass dinning table with dark timber legs in a X cross look in the middle of table will be ideal . You can still see the beautiful floor tiles and the dark timber legs will look amazing over the grey tiles. Have full fabric greyish brown chairs with same leg as the table.

I'd be the opposite -- I love the coffee table ! It is quite different , it matches the chairs , which all complements the rug . The pot matches too , and the plant adds life and a basic colour . I don't like mirrored drawers , but also they seem more boudoir than lounge to me , and then the cart is a different style again -- it's modern that looks 120 years old ! I'd get a long modern white sideboard unit in that white gloss -- 2.5 metres or longer ( as long as it fits somewhere ) , have kept the coffee table , even kept the 2 B&W pics but also have a nice abstract picture , only a bit bigger than the 2 pics , somewhere too -- logically , featuring the green tones of the plant in the white pot . A bit of class , a bit of colour , some leather , and the coffee table as the slightly quirky focal point .
