Chocolate brown leather to put emphasis on your rug would be perfect for kids, dogs and spills. A damp micro fibre cloth is magic for cleanup!!

Mid grey, or mid burgundy. Colours taken from the rug, also grey is in fashion, and mid burgundy is coming back into fashion. Not light colours with kids, unless machine washable cover.

What about Danish chairs?They have less fabric to mark and slip covers are easier to wash.

From another Mum, sell the kids and hang that fab rug on the wall! But I agree dark leather will be a good look, see if you can get one with removable seat cushions as this makes the body of the sofa easier to "de peanut" also if you're looking at letting the children up pick a colour and buy two washable throws! Even the nicest baby can have muddy feet (sorry I do have pics of my son, who I love dearly! making a happy mess on the sofa but plum is cuter)

I'd choose chocolate brown. It would be great contrast with the rug, but still earthy and if it had a woven irregularity, it would be in theme with the rug and not show the marks as much as completely solid colour.

I agree with mykky48 and Clever Closet Company. I think a dark chocolate brown leather lounge would go really well with this beautiful rug. Leather is easy to maintain and lasts a lifetime. No fabric lounges, especially beige, as this will highlight any spills and soak up odours and will definitely be harder to keep clean. Vote for dark chocolate brown leather!

I also love the leather. Chocolate or mid tan. Either would compliment the rug and be durable.

The most kid and pet friendly couch material is leather. So far our blue leather couch has coped with 18 years of toddlers falling asleep and weeing on it, cat vomit, Easter eggs melting between the cushions, spilt milk, spilt orange juice, spilt red wine, spilt coffee, and muddy dog paws. It just wipes clean. Our white leather chair is just as durable and is now 24 years old and just starting to look grubby. So go with beige or cream if you want. It would be a lovely choice, just make sure it is leather. Black or mid or dark brown would also look lovely with that beautiful rug but I think lighter colours would look fresher. Don't be at all scared to use light coloured leather.

I agree with leather. With all of these rich colours, like some of the others have said, I agree with a dark tan type colour, especially if you like worldly textiles and woods. There's a great sofa in freedom called the hermitage I think, in a tobacco colour leather with some studs around it. The pics don't do it justice. The leather is so soft and gets a little lighter with added character with age, yet it still has a modern feel.

I recommended it for a friend to help redesign her place and she absolutely loves it, so does her little one, and her partner. Comfy and you can lay the whole length on the 3 seater.

There's a smaller one than the 3 seater which might be better if your lounge isn't that big.... An ottoman too in case you like to put your feet up

Hi Susan, doesn't that just make you mad, it's so hard to clean and you only get one side (I like to turn the seat to the "clean" side for visitors!) and Suze05, yes the "ermitage is fab looking!

I would think a dark burgundy (leather ? ) would be a good alternative than browns
