For my daughters birthday, who loves Cinderella, I wanted to create her very own ball, So I started with her Cinderella cake, vanilla with lemon meringue buttercream - the old dolly varden barbie doll cake, then a chocolate mud and mousse castle with fondant covered ice cream cones, and to really finish it off, I decided to make a carriage out of fondant.

The whole occasion built from there, so I picked up some refrigerator boxes and set about painting a ballroom scene, and turned my dining table into her own cardboard carriage, I went recycle shopping for supplies, cardboard boxes, some plastic hosing for a couple of dollars, making the carriage and a glue gun!

When she woke up on her day, she was a princess, dad was dressed as Prince Charming, and a real Cinderella arrived to celebrate her day.

Making memories was never so much fun. Im not a pro in this area, but I am at making things from nothing, although it did take me weeks of late nights, but not much money really, do it all yourself from scratch, mostly because you either can't find what you want, or can't afford to pay for it, so making this whole theme from scratch really made her day, even her year.

nothing feels better than knowing you made it yourself.

Damn, ineligible for the prize because I commented too soon. I shall drown my sorrows, and it won't be in tea, whether in a cup or in the bathtub. Every year at Christmas I give my father, who has dementia, a hand made calendar. It has lots photos of the family and big visual cues of daily reminders - what he needs to do, times and places he needs to go. I add to it or change it as I need to throughout the year. Tradition, and a bit of a laugh for both of us, is to hand it on the old carving platter (with spikes to hold the roast) that's all rusty. Thanks for sharing, Lisa

my MIL is one one those that won't fetch anything for herself ..she expects you to get up when she gets up 5-6am and fetch her breakfast..and it's no good offering would you like some toast as she'd be like oh no I'm fine.. you need to cook breakfast and plop it in front of her.. she wouldn't let me wash her clothes so showed her how to use the machine..she hand washes them and pop them on the line right on top of my rack of dried clothes..she took my clothes down so she had room to hang hers out..and of course her dripped on mine ..?? and if she dries the dishes she must do it intentionally to annoy me as it takes me ages to find bits and pieces to my rice cooker..?? amongst other things that happened .. my MIL is hated by all of his family..because she's the second wife..his biological mum is the best MIL you can have she's kind and loving not like this one..calculating ..stabs you behind your back and the list goes on.. my husband must takes after his mum..he's kind and caring.. thank goodness she's overseas now..only lose him to get twice a year for 10 days each..

Made apricot chutney just before last Christmas. Family and friends all loved it and many copies of the recipe handed out.

This is the centre of a quilt that is still not a quilt but which I stitched as I recovered from a very difficult period of my life. It is the best thing I've made because it reminds me of how strong I can be! One day I'll finish it properly...

I make my own bread although I use a bread maker now, I have just started a vege patch and hope to add some fruit trees so I can make my own jam. Always used to make my own cakes but haven,t for awhile last one was for my daughters birthday.

I make most things in my life from scratch; including furniture, art, scrapbooks, greeting cards, candles, clothes, soft furnishings. I could keep going. I don't do it to save money as it usually costs more to costume make something. I do it because of the high I feel every time I finish something and put it in place, and every time someone says, wow. It makes me want to get out of bed early everyday.

So, this guy i read about recently decided to make a loaf of bread from scratch. He built a permaculture garden with chickens for fertiliser, and grew the wheat, processed it himself, baked the loaf. It took a year.

Although a work in progress still, I am making this house ha-ha.

From the foundations up, hubby and I have equally dug holes, mixed and poured concrete, laid bricks, installed windows, laid plumbing and put up the frame etc...

Definitely not clever enough to build my own home like Barbara and cannot create beautiful cakes like mldesign0401.

Here are a couple of items that I have created from scratch. Well, maybe not from scratch as I didn't shear any sheep or spin my own wool. Crochet tartan rugs and cross-stitch.

Now I couldn't do what you have done in a pink fit but did score highly in school in needlework, I guess it's not something that tickles my fancy so to speak but I did knit along time ago and loved it.

You give me far too much credit for being clever about building. I simply asked to be shown how to do something and went ahead and did it, successfully almost all the time ha-ha

Actually just put a new electrical plug on a lead this afternoon and it worked ha-ha....but they are pretty easy, as the instructions tell you what colour goes where, like preparing ingredients for a cake!!!

Kooky Karen, I could never be patient enough to do what you made, but I think all of us share a common thread (pun intended), and that is try something ourselves, and work it out as we go. How wonderful it is online that now we can all see what amazing ppl are creating. We always have had amazing ppl making such things, but usually reserved for family keepsakes, or nanas specialty. Put down the iPhone and pick up a craft I say!

Indeed. I'm often gobsmacked at what people can do. And it's great to see the process in pictures. I do spend a lot more time looking at others creations the actually doing something myself! One of the traps of everything shared online.

I do love seeing the creations that didn't go as planned too! So funny. It's great that people have the sense of humour to still share their "failures". At the end of the day, there's more benefit in the process of creating right? At least they had a go.

Looking at last years plum jams that are still uneaten, this years crop went into plum bbq sauce, using home grown onions and chillis as well. I wouldn't say we are guzzling it down, but there won't be any left by spring.
