Polycarbonate sheet for pergola

Hi we are hoping to re-do our pergola roof in a good quality grey coloured polycarbonate sheet.
We are wondering if anyone has used a top range product that offers 99% UV ray protection, in a grey. We would like it not to be too transparent with at least 40-50% light transmission as our pergola has 3 main living areas that face out towards it. We do not want to make it too dark.

we used a grey polycarbonate for a 2.4m deep covered pergola along the south and west side of our house...more to create a dry area than to have a seating/dining area but it had a nice cooling effect on hot days, we also had a 7mx 5m screened room covered with Colorbond sheeting with a single sheet wide light grey polycarbonate "skylight" which added enough light to prevent darkness inside...both these applications have since been altered but we were quite happy with the results

Thanks for your comments oklousie. Would you mind if I asked you for the brand of the grey polycarbonate sheeting that you used please. I have some samples of grey Ampletite polycarbonate sheeting and they all have a green/blue tinge to them, they are not grey. Thanks.

Have you considered vergola roof systems? Louvred panels that are operable to respond to the elements. Open when sunny, closed with rain, and tilted when hot? They can be much more expensive than traditional pergola systems thoug, so perhaps, have some key areas of rrolfinefitted with horizontal battens rather than sheet roofing for ventilation and effect. Remember to consider clear polycarbonate above windows to retain the sunlight into your home. solid roofing makes it all the more useable, but ventilation and visibility is equally as important.

Oh no! That's a disaster story, Shirley. I am so sorry to hear of your problems with the pergola. I have a friend looking for a roof sheeting material right now for an outdoors area. I will make sure they do not choose what you have chosen. Can you get it replaced? Would it be expensive to replace just the sheeting? I googled your colour and found this photo. Is this what it looks like? Did they tell you that it would stop the heat? I know that blocking UV rays does not stop the heat of the Australian sun. Wishing you better success in you next project!

Inherited two outdoor entertaining areas with smokey coloured polycarbonate roofing only, although the % factor is unknown as its an 80s house. One area is smallish with a fairly low 'ceiling, the other is large and higher. Admittedly, the method of construction isn't ideal, however they both trap quite a bit of heat and 'ping' with heat expansion, so also factor this in when enquiring with the design professionals.

Oh - forgot to mention ... Light transfer to the rooms on the smaller area is quite good, the larger area abuts a dark room, so hard to judge. Both areas are open-walled on the other sides.

pruner - Thanks for the heat expansion tip. I have seen a Suntuf Solarsmart sheet in grey. It has 20% light transmission and 30% heat transmission. I think this is the one we will go with. Thanks again for the ideas and information.
