Houzzers, I've got a polished floor dilemma

I am desperate for advice on how to remove dried silicone from my freshly polished floorboards. Someone....probably me has managed to stand in some that was used to stick felt on chair legs and I've walked it all the way down the hallway. Help help help!!!

I’d use one of those razor blade scrappers, BUNNINGS sell them, we used the for removing rego stickers back in the day.
Then get some supper fine steel wool with some wood oil to remove any residue..rub lightly!

This advice may not be of help but I had silicone all over glass bricks and when I read the destruction notes on the tube, it said use turps.

I did use one of those razor blade scrapers as suggested in the previous post and it did help once the silicone softened up but I would be concerned about it scratching the floor in your case, albeit if you hold it right is shouldn't.

I was dubious that the silicone could be removed having been there a few yeas on my glass bricks but it did work albeit it took allot or rubbing. Not sure what turps will do to the fresh polish but perhaps you could ask the maker of the silicone, as the tube info usually has a hotline number.

Hello, annb! No, not really :-( It will be part of a mini reno later this year, so I still have time up my sleeve. So many of the decisions (like flooring, paint colours, finishes etc) have a knock-on effect, that I need to decide on everything before I start. I think I need to get a cork flooring expert to come and look at our floors and tell me what is and isn't possible in terms of changing the colour of the existing floors. I still think Smartstrand carpet will be the choice for the carpeted areas. But who knows.....I'm feeling quite paralysed to the point of losing confidence about changing anything. I might need a professional to help me decide !

It would be much more cost effective to work with the slate. Image sent by mazgardiner looks great. If the home was purchased for rental purposes, the plinth could be painted white, benchtop and splashback tiles painted (much cheaper than replacing) to blend in with slate colours. If you are going to live in the property, sometimes it's best to live with how it is and replace later when you have better understanding of what you want. Good luck with it all!

Study - polished concrete or carpet?

Thanks @philippawright. Our concrete will be full exposure of the aggregate, so lots of movement and interest. We would definitely use a rug in this room if we did not have carpet. No messy hobbies in here. The room will be used as a study for my husband and I and will double up as a small sitting room (library and TV) with two armchairs. We have four bedrooms in our house so don't anticipate using this room as a bedroom. But you never know. Our style is modern, not industrial, but a touch of luxe with hand blown glass feature pendants, and timber accents. It was always going to be carpet. But the levels have left me confused. If the concrete polishers can grind the concrete down so that is is recessed, and there will be minimal step up from hallway to carpet, then I'll probably stick with carpet. Do you think this is a good plan?

I suggest going to Bunnings they will have a silicone remover and they will be able to tell you the method to remove it, (have you tried to loosen it with a hairdryer, it may make the silicone soft and therefore peel off, try in an inconspicuous area first) Other than that Bunning also have a DIY expert that will also be able to help, good luck, DO NOT panic there will be a solution, don't try anything without doing the home work, I have used a hairdryer before on similar and it worked well but be careful to keep the dryer heat on the actual silicone but as I said do it where it wont be noticed if it doesn't work, it's amazing how many things a hairdryer can be used for besides hair!

Thank you all for your suggestions. I have been away for the weekend and offline so I've just read your posts. I ended up using Baby Oil of all things. It was a tedious job trying to see where one had rubbed...I have certainly learnt a hard lesson. Be extra vigilant when using bloody silicone!!!
