Pros and cons, but ultimately which would you choose?

probably a wool blend. depends on your lifestyle ? Are there children/pets involved. In any event red cordial is never gonna come out !

I've had an all wool runner on my stairs for 12 years and absolutely love it. We have a large dog and two kids have grown up with this stair with no slipping issues. Wool is great for other reasons from an environmental aspect. There are several online sources that can educate you about wool carpets and it's appropriate applications.

Just read your post again... Wool does 'fluff' a lot ... Staircase may be a 'high traffic area' - do you want carpet on it? (Without it could also be higher noise though) We have carpet upstairs (wool in lounge and synthetic in hall and bedrooms with wooden floor in kitchen separating carpets). Also just wooden floor for staircase and downstairs. I'm amazed at how much dust gathers on stairs, but easier to sweep clean than to vacuum)... Definitely recommend keeping some offcut pieces to use as mats ... Reduces dirt of rest of carpet. The carpet shops can get them trimmed/'edging' and you can attach some plastic 'non slip' backing.

Hi L O When looking for carpets, ask your retailer to give you information about VOC's. Depending on where you are, I would recommend any Godfrey Hirst/Feltex SOLUTION DYED NYLON carpet if you are in OZ, or both those and Cavalier if you are in NZ, as a first point of call. Google VOC's in relation to carpets and you will get a myriad of information which covers testing that has been done as far as use of chemicals etc goes ( or non use, in these cases). The lower the VOC the better. There should be no side effects to SDN's, or a triexta carpet (which is made from derivitives of corn sugar). All above are particularly good if anyone in the family suffers from allergies etc. AND SDN will not attract carpet beetle. Sadly, wool being a natural fibre is susceptible to this pest. Any more specific help needed, just ask.

Ive never had a wool carpet but I've heard that wool carpets will go fuzzy and moult. Is that true??

Natural materials all the way. Wool greener choice and longevity. Plus feels so much better underfoot.

I believe that depends more on the type of pile and on the quality than on the material it's made of. If wool carpet has such a reputation my guess is that's because of cheap wool berber style (loop pile) carpets which were very popular for a while.

wool wool and wool can pill for a while but much warmer and lasts so much longer .

Wool - not a blend. Warmer, lasts better, doesn't get static and better if a fire,

So true re wool being naturally fire resistant. We replaced with wool carpet the synthetic builder's range carpet in an earlier home after embers from the fireplace shot out onto it and burned it. In our current home we have a large wool area rug in living room, which has a wood burning fireplace, and embers have shot out of it and landed on the rug...and nothing happened.

The amount of people that contact us due to their sensitive skin, allergies or reactions to synthetic fibres is astounding. Please choose wool and natural fibres over synthetic. It's not worth it.
