Pools & Spas Design Dilemma Exterior

Pool tile advice.

We are looking for tiles for our alfresco area and to surround our pool? We need to match in a waterline tile as well and was looking for something other than the mosaics idea. Has anyone got any ideas for something affordable that looks great. Many thanks in advance.

Usually waterline tiles are small mosaics as the corner of the pool is curved to assist with cleaning and pool sweeps. Large tiles won't be able to carry around the curve. The only option would be to use slender, finger-like tiles, laid vertically. These types of tiles look great, but are not cheap.

Hi Emma. You need to keep in mind that waterline pool tiles are especially designed to cope with the rigours of pool chemicals etc. My go to for pool tiles is Cotto

Your problem is the heat generated by the fence and the pool and path. Anything you plant will have to be super tough. All plants loose and replace their leaves. Evergreen drop some leaves all the time and deciduous once a year. Adding pebbles will only reflect more heat and is becoming a dated look along with the cordylines. I'm not sure of your climate but a bullet proof evergreen plant that will cover the fence and take sun, drought and frost is the nandina domestica. Upright growing but no pruning required. There are new varieties of this plant but this one is just the right height to cover the fence. If you get cold weather in winter you will also get autumn colour. Will sucker from the bottom to fill the gap but not a garden thug. Has berries but because of the upright habit should fall into the garden bed. Sometimes called sacred bamboo but not a bamboo.

Having done many homes over the past couple of years with similar colour schemes, I’d suggest a soft grey tile with a slight variation in it. Plain grey could be just a little too safe, erring on the boring, while a marble look tile can be repetitious in pattern and look fake. When you go looking for your tile, ask them how many tiles before the pattern is repeated. If it’s between 40 and 60 you shouldn’t have any problem with it. Hope this was of help! Jill

Hi there, I'd be inclined to go with seating/ledge on the alfresco side. In our pool, people gravitate to the side where the seating is. Some sit in the pool while other's are on the lounges and they can still have a conversation. There is also that all important access to shade, especially for those with fair skin or children you might want out of the sun for a while. And, on those really hot days, its just nice to sit in the pool, in the shade, in the afternoon with a cool drink. I guess that means I'm on team purple ;)

I thought you could have doors/windows as long as they were lockable in such a way that they function as a pool safety fence? Though I have no idea if that is still the case and also if it is something than varies or varied in different jurisdictions? If you don't have warm winters you don't want to cover the northern windows with an alfresco, unless it is an opening type roof.

We used outdoor tiles that matched tiles we used in our bathrooms. We had a great tiler who laid these as coping and waterline, and pool patio. We then had the edges honed by another contractor to give a rounded edge after they were laid.

Hi Emma. As mentioned above, you can select a porcelain tile that is suitable for outdoor use. This can then be installed as your paving, coping and waterline similar to below.

I would suggest 100-150mm of waterline tile as below.

Otherwise we have installed pavers such as Anston or Stone Outdoors and then matched the colour with a porcelain waterline tile.
