Cooktop in island bench good for social interaction?
Comments (50)I'm about to put a cooktop on the 2.3 x 900 peninsular (island with only one free end ( in my new galley kitchen. I am using an induction top so it can be fitted flush with the benchtop surface, allowing me to use the whole area as benchtop when not in use. I intend to have bar stolls on the living room side for entertaining. My joiner has suggested making a beautiful, thin timbercover to go over the glass induction surface for added protection. I just need to decide on down draft induction hob or a ceiling casette. My main aim is to remove the smelly cooking smells from my unit. The smell from one evening of cooking indian chicken curry currently lasts at least a week! Any advice?...See Moreage old question, two or three pendants over island?
Comments (13)Thanks for posting this dilemma - I am facing the same predicament! I have been stalking pendant lights over kitchen islands for about 18 months now and have noticed that there are a lot of interior designers, in new builds and online etc. who are using two pendant lights instead of the very common ''rule of three''. This is more so the case when the lights are quite distinctive or a feature. You don't want to close in the space or obstruct the line of sight... yet you do want to opt for functionality and balance. I have just sold (argggg!) my three medium solid black pendants and have opted for a ''lighter'' feeling material that are larger, to ensure they balance. sit above a 2.8m lenght bench. Comments (17)They look great in that photo, Northstar! Works beautifully. Will be fine over your bench. Didn't realise how large your p really space will be. Wow! No, if you replace pendants that have staggered drops, the fittings are completely removed and new pendant fittings are installed in their place. The electrician just shortens the drops without cutting them & the extra lenth is hidden away in ceiling....See MoreTo start kitchen over or refurb
Comments (4)with tedious careful effort it could be possible to dismantle the old kitchen and rearrange the original (limewashed?) cabinets and existing appliances into a new floor plan with new counters...the best way to discover what's possible is to post a whole house plan plus more detailed plan of the whole room (kitchen and adjoining open areas) showing measurements of each wall and showing size and location of doors and windows and original position of stove and sink, then, ignoring the counters, measure the outside width of each separate cabinet module (eg 450 wide drawers, 1200 wide 2 door sink cabinet, 600 wide stacked oven and microwave cabinet etc) and post the details to invite suggestion for alternative arrangements ...depending on where you live there could be a local kitchen reno company that can do this for you or save money and do the work yourself with a new counter custom made to suit ...it's difficult to understand the dimensions from the photo but simply rotating the island might be enough to create a more open plan arrangement...See MoreBarbara Collett
