Bronte House, 2024

Bronte House is a full transformation of an original single-storey beachside dwelling into a cohesive three-level family home, shaped by a steeply sloping site and a brief focused on light, space and long-term liveability.

The project reworks the existing structure to establish a strong connection between interior spaces and the landscaped backyard. Entry occurs at mid-level through a double-height foyer, setting the scale of the home and leading into a series of layered living spaces organised vertically and horizontally around a sculptural timber staircase.

At the rear, an open-plan kitchen, dining and living zone extends seamlessly toward the garden. Full-height and double-storey glazing introduce natural light, enhance ventilation and reinforce the indoor–outdoor relationship, creating a calm and expansive living environment.

A restrained yet rich material palette defines the project. Timber is used consistently across ceilings, joinery and stair elements to bring warmth and continuity, while charred timber cladding provides durability and depth suited to the coastal context. Recycled brick, stone and marble are introduced selectively, grounding the new intervention while elevating key interior spaces.

Delivered through close collaboration between client, architect and builder, the project reflects a disciplined construction process where complexity, site constraints and detailing were resolved with precision.

The result is a light-filled, spatially connected coastal home that balances openness with privacy and refinement. Bronte House was recognised as a Winner in the MBA Excellence in Housing Awards 2024, reflecting the quality of execution and level of craftsmanship achieved.
