Bronte Studio, 1999

Bronte Studio is a purpose-built workspace designed for a furniture designer, created within a leafy residential property in Bronte.

The project was designed by Peter Stutchbury and Sue Harper, and reflects a clear focus on material honesty, structure and connection to landscape.

As the owner’s business grew, the brief was to provide a dedicated studio environment while allowing her to remain close to home and family. The structure is built entirely from recycled hardwood timber, with the framework expressed as a crafted element in its own right.

Externally, the building is clad in hoop pine ply and miniorb, complementing the timber structure and reinforcing a simple, cohesive material palette.

The studio includes a bathroom, clean-up area and an outdoor shower to the rear. Perforated miniorb cladding allows views to the surrounding trees while maintaining privacy, strengthening the connection between the workspace and its garden setting.

Despite its compact footprint, the project provides a functional and well-resolved environment for both work and daily use. The result is a lightweight and carefully crafted studio — defined by material reuse, simplicity and a strong relationship to its natural surroundings.
