Roseville House, 2020

Roseville House is a considered renovation of an existing Arts and Crafts residence, designed to improve liveability for a growing family while retaining the character of the original home.

Rather than replacing the house, the project introduces a series of targeted interventions, including the removal of the rear living areas and the addition of a contemporary extension anchored to the existing structure. A new concrete volume — defined by sculptural skylights, steel elements and large glazed openings — brings natural light deep into the plan and establishes a clear spatial organisation between old and new.

Internally, the extension is softened by a curved timber-clad wall, integrating concealed doors to allow flexibility between living and private zones. This balance of robust structure and refined detailing supports both everyday family life and entertaining.

The material palette is deliberately restrained. Concrete, steel and glazing form the primary architectural language, while timber introduces warmth and continuity — creating a dialogue between heritage and contemporary elements without overstating contrast.

Delivered through close collaboration between client, architect and builder, the project reflects a disciplined construction process where design intent was carefully resolved and executed on site.

The result is a light-filled, spatially cohesive home that supports modern living while maintaining the integrity of its Arts and Crafts origins. The project was recognised as a Finalist in the HIA-CSR NSW Housing and Kitchen & Bathroom Awards 2022.
