This garden on the shores of Puget Sound, in the Pacific Northwest, adopts a similar color palette of blue, lavender and gray-green in the beds leading from the home to a patio on the water. Plants include blue oat grass (Helictotrichon sempervirens, zones 4 to 8), iris, ceanothus, rosemary, pine, lavender, blanket flower and thyme.
Including some trailing plants — like ivy, pothos, philodendron or grass-like carex — can help conceal the vertical growing structure.
9. Sculptural accents. This contemporary design in Sydney is arranged just like a living room seating area — with a sectional bench, accent chair and pair of coffee tables. A row of potted grass-like plants injects some color and breaks up the expanse of the wood wall, almost like a row of potted houseplants would.
