Look at hood. John says we can keep existing hood and wrap it. This is nice but would just do horiz wood at top and not doors.

See HOOD - this is another suggestion from John (2010 Idea House) but I am not sure I like the "box". If we did do it like this, I would want the boards to run horizontally I think. Maybe wood look better if open shelving on either side was integrated.

John mentioned El Dorado stone fireplace surround as used at Idea house. This would meet code and deflect enough heat to still mount tv at a comfortable viewing height. There is a very simple profile (soho) on their website which could work. Use surround and just paint brick. No mantle if tv to be mounted above because at 14" above box to meet code it would make tv to high.
