Who: Moshe BenNissan and Stacy Guetta of American Home Improvement
Where: Woodland Hills, California
In BenNissan’s own words: “I love the fact that I can transform something old and unappealing into something new and refreshing, and put a smile on my client’s face.”
Jumping into a home remodel is exciting. It also takes you into unfamiliar territory as you make decisions about how your new space will look and feel. “We’re here to make you as comfortable as possible,” says general contractor Moshe BenNissan, CEO of American Home Improvement in Woodland Hills. Marketing manager Stacy Guetta adds, “We know what’s new, but we also want to give you something that still reflects your style.”

Love of remodeling. BenNissan’s interest in home improvement started at an early age. “Ever since I was a young man, I loved doing things around the house, especially small remodeling tasks,” he says. In 2004, BenNissan turned his love of remodeling into his profession and opened American Home Improvement.
Three-pronged approach. Guetta says the team first focuses on giving homeowners a design that fits what they want and love. “We call it a three-piece design,” she says. After meeting with clients at their home and learning more about their priorities, the design group produces options complete with renderings, and then a final design.
Looking for ways to add your own touch to your home’s remodel? BenNissan and Guetta provide some tips below.

1. Choose What You Love
Include the styles, colors and features you personally love in your design. For the Encino homeowners whose kitchen is seen here, that meant a mix of modern and traditional elements. “They came up with an idea, and we provided a three-dimensional design, so they knew it would be exactly what they wanted,” BenNissan says.
This take on a classic blue-and-white kitchen gets its updated style from an unusual teal blue color on the cabinets and white porcelain tile flooring with black-and-white mosaic tile insets. The same mosaic tile is used for the backsplash behind the stove. White upper cabinets, creamy marble countertops, and black backsplash accents complete the look. “It’s modern but still home,” BenNissan says.

2. Be Open to Bigger Changes
Be open to changing a layout or expanding a space to get what you really want. For this Los Angeles primary bathroom, the team enlarged the footprint to accommodate the separate bath and shower the homeowners wanted.
The additional space allowed the team to turn the freestanding tub into the centerpiece of the room. A tub-to-ceiling mosaic tile backsplash with a niche and towel racks highlights the tub. “It’s an unusual tile,” Guetta says. The team flanked the tub with matching vanities and installed an oversize glass-enclosed shower to help open up the space. Stone-look porcelain flooring and subtly patterned Carrara marble wall tiles add to the contemporary look.

3. Rethink Your Finishes
Your home might not need a full remodel for a fresh look. New finishes “can make your home look and feel much larger,” Guetta says.
The team kept the basic layout of the Los Angeles home seen here, but redid everything within it to update the look. The changes included adding beams, dropping a ceiling, installing quartz and stone, and using warm wood flooring throughout much of the first floor, changing it to a herringbone pattern in the kitchen and family room to delineate the spaces. “You don’t need to limit your materials to just one,” Guetta says. The result is an updated space that feels warm and welcoming.
