Julian approached our unusual & complex brief with enthusiasm, good ideas & attention to detail. Our aim was to restore a dilapidated 1880s shopfront & reimagine the 1970s double brick two storey extension, combining original features where possible, with energy efficiency & modern living functionality. Features of the design we were particularly happy with include: The judicious placing of solar powered skylights to enhance light & heat extraction; Hydronic heating throughout; Redesign of the living areas in the extension to more open plan living; The cladding of the extension with a 'skin' to aid insulation & with aesthetic appeal not out of character with the existing heritage building. Our home is an example of how clever & imaginative design can preserve an older building in an inner suburb & enhance the streetscape without compromising current standards of liveability.

Julian has done some consulting and advocacy for our eco-village when facing severe over shadowing from a proposed neighbouring development. His expert sustainable-design knowledge around sun paths and solar shading allowed us to see the full extent of the impacts. In conjunction with presentations from community residents, Julian presented his findings to Council DAP and then to the ERD Court. His professional advice and services were pivotal in recognising the actual impacts of the proposal, ultimately helping lead to the rejection of the proposal's application.

Julian's expertise in modelling the impact of overshadowing allowed us to fully understand and quantify the impact of a neighbouring development. The clarity and accuracy of diagrams was exceptional.

He works hard to ensure each project is suited to its setting and its budget from the very outset, which means the client ends up saving $ in the long run. He is very friendly and accommodating and brings his personal values to his work. From the moment we moved in I have loved our house (sometimes it hard to get motivated to go away on holiday because our place is so comfortable and beautiful!). Our kids are always proud to show new friends round, pointing out all the little individual features that give it such extra character. You'll never get those sorts off touches by buying off the plan. Julian is highly skilled and has exacting standards so you can be confident you will get what you expect.

Julian Rutt did a fantastic job on our house; lots of attention to detail, including many unexpected little things that bring us delight every day. The house has lots of natural light but is easy to keep cool in summer as well as warm in winter. It reflects our personality but is not a monument, perfect for entertaining or equally a quiet night in, a refuge after a busy day. It’s integrated beautifully with the garden with nicely framed views from every window. We love living here, and our neighbours in the street all love the house too
