Here is my little secret and It was passed on to me by a professional baker. For crusty loaves or rollers that are looking sad place them under a running tap. Wet the entire surface then place in the oven directly onto a rack for a few minutes before serving. Ensure that the crust is dry. You will be amazed at the result.
You will find a fresh loaf crusty on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Try it and you will want to be my friend.

I store them in a dark cool cupboard with the potatoes, or i try and chop them all up as soon as I get them in the food processor and put in zip lock bags in the freezer, that way they won't go off and so easy to just grab out a handful when cooking. If they do shoot i bury them in the garden to grow more. same with garlic, i chop it all up in the food processor then place in ice cube trays in freezer, once frozen i place in zip lock bag, then it's just a matter of having a block or 2 out when cooking.

I agree with Janet – chilling uncooked potatoes does them no favours at all plus they often turn a rather unappetising dirty grey colour which means that you will tend to keep them in the fridge for a few days and then throw them out anyway! If you have an extra prepared potato (ie one that has been peeled and/or cut) don't let it sit around chilled or unchilled – cook it anyway with the rest of the spuds and then you can keep the cooked (boiled, roasted, mashed, whatever) potato to use in any number of ways for tomorrow's breakfast or lunch or as a snack (potato salad, potato cakes, potato gratin... ) or even (if you have an odd aversion to using up left-overs) chop it into the dog's dinner or the chooks' scraps...

I also would look at the space available before putting the fridge where the cross is. I would look at placing the fridge along the back wall. Placing the fridge where cross is may reduce the width of access between island and fridge. Ideally walkway should be 900mm or greater. What ever you do make sure the fridge is in built in cabinetry, with cupboards above. Otherwise it looks lost.

In spring and summer, if you want your bread to last through a full 7 days, the remainder of the loaf should go into the freezer by day 4. Else you would start seeing mould on it by day 5.

I often see mould on bread well before the use-by date, so have resorted to freezing right off the bat. I only ever toast my bread, so it makes no difference...

Well, actually, I voted pantry but it usually stays on the counter since I don't have a pantry per se. Also, I don't buy bread often and when I do, I need to see it to remember I have it. Most of the time, when I do buy it, I'm planning some type of get together so I know it will be used quickly. My mom used to put it in the freezer but I never liked it. No matter how fresh going in, it felt dry when it thawed out.

bread actually stales quicker in the fridge but if you live in a hot climate it seems to make no difference - in Queensland my bread stales really quickly in a bread bin too!

No matter where you place bread, it never tastes as good as the day it was baked/when you bought it!

Freezer and remove only the slices you require for the day, preferably early morning. That way you will have fresh bread for your sandwiches at lunch and it shouldn't make any difference if toasting. This will save the bread going off and dry, especially in summer.

Freezer, as soon as it's in the house. We often have loaves of white, multigrain, fruit, rye and fancy grain all 'on the go' at the same time. Mind you, we also have the largest separate fridge freezer combination available and a household of up to 6 adults.

Always freezer , the secret is it must be double wrapped , save wrapper from previous bread , cover already wrapped bread allowing air pocket similar to double glazing , great result .

As I live 25 km away from town, I buy all my bread and freeze it straight away, so whether I want to make sandwiches or toast for breakfast, I pull several slices off and leave the rest in the freezer so my sandwiches are always still fresh.

yep....Freezer, with only the amount needed removed. Unless of course its fresh bought /baked and its shopping day, then its left on bench to eat as desired but any remainder is frozen at end of day. Totally agree with double wrapping the bread, especially ones like woolworths store baked that have a plastic cello type bag that literally disintegrates in freezer unless in another bag. I just use the shopping bag it comes in. And Im rural so several loaves are bought at once.

Freezer for me too. It tends to go mouldy in the fridge and when you're paying up to $7.00 for wheat free/dairy free bread the last thing you want to do is feed it to the chooks or dog!

When I was in high school mum would buy a loaf and I would make all my sandwiches (vegemite or peanut butter, jam etc) for the week and cling wrap them and freeze them. Each morning I would toss one in my school bag and it was soft and delicious by lunch. Like it had just been baked and made.

Bread in the freezer, almost always. Unless it's a freshly baked loaf or baguette which won't stay uneaten for long!

You know the major supermarkets have already frozen alot of the cakes and bread they sell, right? Bread "bin". When I used to live in Sydney, that's how I avoided attracting any cockroaches.

bread bin or pantry! never heard of it in the fridge. I know it can be kept frozen and left to thaw when needed

I expect because of pressure from health organizations and the general public to eat healthier food, there is less sugar and salt in the bread, hence it doesn't last as long.

Many of our supermarkets have bakeries that make different types of bread daily. I prefer getting mine from there.

I make all my own bread, no sugar or other undesirables!! It all gets sliced and individually bagged then frozen so no mould ever!!

Thanks Chookchook2 I've been experimenting recently with sourdough but this month I've been slack with house guests so not much baking done by moi, however the freezer stash took a fair thumping as apparently my lemon curd slathered on my toast is pretty good fodder, who knew!!!

The family I board with house their staples in the pantry, however, as I am a Celiac and my staples go off quickly I always put them in the fridge!
