New colours for a foyer, door and deck

I'd love some advice and opinions on these aspects of my home.
I feel that the foyer is too dark. It has green shadecloth above the pergola that I'm planning to remove. I was tossing up the idea of rendering the far wall ( the one with the front door on it). All the trim, window frames and pergola are mission brown which dates the building but is there another colour that would work. I also wonder whether I need to change the brown tiles.
To the deck/balcony, it's a red brown colour, does it work? You can see a patch of sandy color paint that I tried out but I could never make up my mind!

Comments (20)The stone is from YDL Stone called Kalala Shan. I wanted caesarstone calacatta nuvo but that would have broken the bank! This one still has that marble look I wanted but it's actually a warm base more off white, goes well with wood and the trouble I am having is which grey to put it with in the bathrooms! Comments (15)For me...I'd keep the deck the colour it is, may give it a refresh if necessary and go hunting for outside bentwood firniture, you know that curly bamboo kind, it never dates and is elegant and above all comfortable...where many outdoor settings may look good but are not inviting. If the space were mine...and if it had shelter from the elements, or if you didn't mind some of those outdoor firniture protector covers for inclement weather ( when you may as well bring the furniture in...whatever it is..) .I'd also condsider going on the hunt for some lovely old colonial-looking wicker items painted brilliant white, it always makes a statement, always looks classy and is always gentle on the posterior! If you can find the genuine article often you will discover that the seats are made of entwined dried grasses and palm leaves. I'd also go looking at some of those plant/cafe' places...that sell plants, fountains, as well as up-market snacks and are often furnished with wicker...no harm in asking where they bought it...they may even sell it. Its a cosy little space...I'd just have come large comfy outdoor chairs and maybe little side tables. Think of fancy English ladies sitting out of doors watching a cricket match on the manor lawn and sipping drinks...that's the scenario I see there. Comments (20)I love Julie's ideas of succulents , especially the pics with several different ones in the same pot . As far as the grey , I wouldn't -- you look like you like colour and excitement , so I'd go yellow on the pots -- a similar or slightly brighter shade then the cushion on the couch or chair to the left . It would tie it all in , and make that lovely mat look more like a feature too IMO . Without knowing 'the bigger picture' ( what else is 'happening' around that wall ) , just what I see I'd be inclined to add a light either side of the door too -- stick to the same shade as the joinery ( personally , I'd go for a 'clean rustic; style with say 15 squares each side ) , or if brave ( and assuming the guttering etc is probably a similar charcoal as your door joinery ? ) , go for the same yellow as your pots -- add a Wow !...See Morewanting to create new entry & deck
Comments (6)Like oklouise , I'm trying to work out what you are wanting to achieve ? Do you have a handicapped person living there -- its not clear to me . A ramp down the right side is going to look funny IMO -- the section slopes , but a flat ramp back to the driveway/garage would cover the bottom couple of inches of that picture window and the sill .A sloping ramp would just be wrong and weird , angles that would look wrong . It looks like the existing terrace is 2700 deep -- its hard to tell if 'behind' that is an entry foyer ? If the terrace isn't deep enough , I'd tend to try and go IN , not out . I hope you take this as constructive , but the existing doors look more like factory doors than house ones . So I'd go 'inwards' , and do an 'impress the neighbours' double solid full height timber doors , with stained timber picture windows either side . On that theme , I'd also change the 3 picture windows to stained timber frames too , and the greeny grey shiplap I'd try and strip and stain -- if not possible , paint in apricot or lemon or light red , THEN do the fascia boards in a really bright shade the same ( bright orange , sunshine yellow or fire engine red ) . The grey outdoor tiles I'd try and concrete stain ( I probably shouldn't admit this , but I once got a good charcoal oil-based outdoor paint , thinned it ( from a 20 litre thing of turps ) about 2 to 1 , and brushed the outdoor tiles twice over 2 days -- it soaked in well , wasn't slippery , and lasted well -- at least well enough to sell the property a couple of months later haha ) . So $20k instead of $100k , less matching to do , but there is still the problem of the ramp . . . . . ....See More
