Hi, just wanting some advice on our entrance hallway. We have a feature wall opposite the front door. French doors to the left into the theatre room. Will the French doors take away interest from the feature wall?

I don't think the french doors will necessarily take away interest from the feature wall (incidentally what exactly is going to be the feature of that wall?) but I query the need for the french doors given you already have another access/entry to the theatre from the corridor/passage (btw not sure a glass door is ideal from a sound point of view). Wouldn't it make more sense to close off the 'french doors' wall which would not only provide you with better furniture layout options in the theatre (e.g. big corner modular would provide more seating) but this would also allow you to have some sort of console (or other) near the entry. Then if you really want the french doors maybe relocate them to the other corridor access point in lieu of the glass door.

Is it likely that Theatre Room will always be used for that purpose and you will stay in house for a long time? I'd consider flexibility and resale value.

Like oklouise , I'm trying to work out what you are wanting to achieve ? Do you have a handicapped person living there -- its not clear to me . A ramp down the right side is going to look funny IMO -- the section slopes , but a flat ramp back to the driveway/garage would cover the bottom couple of inches of that picture window and the sill .A sloping ramp would just be wrong and weird , angles that would look wrong . It looks like the existing terrace is 2700 deep -- its hard to tell if 'behind' that is an entry foyer ? If the terrace isn't deep enough , I'd tend to try and go IN , not out . I hope you take this as constructive , but the existing doors look more like factory doors than house ones . So I'd go 'inwards' , and do an 'impress the neighbours' double solid full height timber doors , with stained timber picture windows either side . On that theme , I'd also change the 3 picture windows to stained timber frames too , and the greeny grey shiplap I'd try and strip and stain -- if not possible , paint in apricot or lemon or light red , THEN do the fascia boards in a really bright shade the same ( bright orange , sunshine yellow or fire engine red ) . The grey outdoor tiles I'd try and concrete stain ( I probably shouldn't admit this , but I once got a good charcoal oil-based outdoor paint , thinned it ( from a 20 litre thing of turps ) about 2 to 1 , and brushed the outdoor tiles twice over 2 days -- it soaked in well , wasn't slippery , and lasted well -- at least well enough to sell the property a couple of months later haha ) . So $20k instead of $100k , less matching to do , but there is still the problem of the ramp . . . . . .

You would have to look at the size of the space and purchase a light that is proportional to the facade. My suggestion would be two lights positioned either side of the front door.

I think modern would be fine given the location. But I think there should be some nod to it at the front in your landscaping. I'm thinking the traditional pickets should maybe be swapped out for a straight edge style. I'd also think about your paint scheme as it will need to work for both the modern door and the heritage facade.

The doors will take interest away from the feature wall - why do you want them - is it for the light or do you just like them? What are you putting in the recess?

Thank you for your advice the feature wall will have a nice piece of artwork. The layout of the furniture is a problem in this room. Most display homes we visited had French doors or an opening in the entrance that we liked. On the other door into the theatre room we were thinking to put a large slider, and remove the french entrance door. Any ideas for the feature wall?

Keep the French doors. At some future date someone may use that room as a living/sitting room. If you want the feature wall to stand out then I suggest you paint it a stunning colour or at least the inset.

I agree with kooky_karen.

Just don't make the French doors too fancy, though obvioulsy the overall style of the house (which is btw??).

You will also need to consider light into the Theatre room - will it affect the viewing? If so, you may need to consider some way of reducing or completely shutting off incoming light.

Difficult to really advise overall without seeing what else is going on around that room, overall style of home, etc., but I would definitely have at least one pair of French Doors/larger entryways into this room, regardless of the feature wall.

I have no idea what style and colours you have in mind but looking at the plan I immediately pictured standing in the entry and I could see the French doors and feature wall working well together. I think the more important questions are about the matters Pazz raised with big glass doors re sound insulation and furniture layout.

I would keep the French doors as I love them, the other door is just a normal size, if you want to add large seats/lounge etc you may need the double doors to get them in, the recess area could have a lovely hall table with the art work above, this would make a real feature as this is the first area your eyes would travel to when you enter your front door.

wouldn't normally comment but can't help but suggest a large full height and width feature cavity sliding door which can be closed for movies/winter/parties whatever and opened up to promote more open living the remainder of the time and therefore keeping your feature wall as the undoubted focal point.

Thanks for your comment Dan. A slider would work much better, but I am still a little unsure how the seating arrangement would work in front of this door.
