I have a whole wall that I need to block off with some sort of door. I'm thinking that a bi-fold door would be awesome. However, my husband kind of wants a sliding door. I just think how cool it'd be to have a whole wall made up of a door that could easily be tucked away when needed. This would make outdoor barbecues a lot easier. I couldn't tick one or the other of the boxes – I think the choice has to be made contingent on so many variables. In fact we have painted timber, double-glazed bifolds (with a fabulous retractable pleated fly-screen) at the end of the dining room leading out onto a terrace and a painted timber, double-glazed slider (with a timber-framed sliding fly-screen) on the other side of the kitchen (but on the same axis) opening onto a raised timber deck. Each works really well in terms of function and aesthetics but they would not be interchangeable as the different locations determined which was more suitable – but they have been made by the same highly skilled window craftsman and have given us nothing but pleasure. And on a hot, steamy evening with both open we have the most wonderful cross ventilation.

do you mean internal sliders or hinged doors? what would be the purpose of the wide opening? where will the doors stand when open? do the open doors interfere with movement around both the bedroom and the room from which you enter the bedroom? will the wide opening reduce available space for furniture placement on either side?? only consider a bigger than normal (820mm wide) opening if it improves the space and doesn't compromise movement or furniture for both rooms

SOOOO Annoying....I 100% feel your pain, I've had many "discussions" (read: confrontations) with builders about this - despite clear specification they just don't seem to get that seamless/concealed means we don't want to see that sliding door sticking out AT ALL.........Yes, you can fix it, but the problem with the less invasive option, (which is to pack out the frame so that the door is completely concealed) is the reduction in the opening width.......this detail to pull off well needs to be nailed down at framing stage/ordering of the cavity door units, because the cavity unit really needs to be ordered longer.......it's an expensive fix for the builder if they stuff it up - they'll try and talk you out of it, so if you had it in the contract/spec possibly it's a point of negotiation if there are other variations/extras involved...
