With your suggestion of 300x600 on wall and 300x300 on floor - each pair of floor tiles will have a grout line, so you would need to have wider grout lines on wall or end up with them not quite matching. Not a problem if you run the rectangles vertically. Hope that makes sense? We also encountered an issue where some tile manufactures make 300x600 tiles exact in size and others allow for grout width so shave a few mm off the actual tile size.

We lay (white) 600 x 300 all the time. We lay them horizontally as they make the room look larger.

We then lay 600 x 600 on the floors. We spend up on the floor tiles ($100 - $120m2) as the walls are usually around $25 -$29m2.

Here is a similar sized area that we converted from a sleep out a few years ago with the sizes I mentioned. The bulkhead was a solution to eliminate the sloping roof and disguise the sleep outs' former purpose.

If I were to place downlights, what positioning should I have them? How many should I add? I was thinking 2 downlights is enough with an IXL.

Bathroom size is 2800 (H) x 1800 (L). I was thinking maybe something like this:

Would the downlight in the shower area affect the light bulb directly (not so much the lighting, but the actual light itself due to steam)

Should the downlight be directly underneath the vanity or slightly away from it as to keep it. Any other positioning of downlight recommendations? Thanks!

I'm sure there are plenty of lighting consultants on here, but we always place a down light over the vanity so you are not in shadow and then a couple of lights spaced to suit the room.

We use LED's but still avoid placing directly in the shower like below.

Depending on the use of the room (eg ensuite) we often place the vanity light on a separate circuit (switch)

Hallway = 5m (I was thinking 2 or 3)
Fireplace = 3.3m x 4.56m (I was advised by builder/electrician to place 5 downlights, to be positioned one on each corner and one in the middle, like the number 5 on a dice.)
Kitchen to Rear = 7.6m x 4.56m (This one I feel is tricky)
Bedrooms = Using pendant lights. Or would you suggest downlights?

Hi there! I would recommend using the same size tile on both floor and wall, maybe a 300x600, you could always do a different colour tile in the same style if you don't want it to match to much. It will flow nicely if the tile is the same size and create the look of a bigger space.

Location of switches is obviously up to your lifestyle so I have nominated a basic layout. You could switch at kitchen wall as we have done recently as well as the wall for the over bench lights.

Assuming there is nothing going against the bathroom wall?

We use pendants for features eg beside beds in master or over bench tops to kitchen only. Rest is LED. It's not everyone's preference, but we use cool white LED's with either a white or metal surround.

No problems. I have tweaked it a little in response to the other rooms. The kitchen lights are moved out slightly off the cabinetry for better overhead lighting and added two under cabinet /bulkhead lights that are wall switched.

Have also added a light for just outside the laundry for when you are standing there with washing. Back room can be on one circuit although I have shown two as don't know where you are placing furniture.

We make the bathroom lights separate as shown and also do the fan separate. Our sparkie hates it but we like to be able to use the room without the fan automatically coming on.

Have shown pendants in the master but that's up to you. I can delete if you like.

On a side note, are the bedroom doors swinging that way deliberately? We would normally swing them opposite to that shown so that they open against a wall and you have clearance to walk around the beds. If this is to be changed then your switch locations need to be changed also.

It's always helpful to get some insight. For the exhaust fan in the bathroom, I was thinking placement to be above the toilet or on the opposite end of the shower.

What would seem more appropriate?

Note: Should I:

1. Keep the three downlights and buy the exhaust fan only. Or buy the exhaust fan that also comes with the led light.

Should I not have the fan in an obvious area as to make the bathroom look "clean/neater" looking..

I know the subject is how the tile sizes work, but show should they be tiled?

For example, if I have 300 x 600, and if you look at the floorplan from 5 posts previously, you would see the bathroom layout.

What's generally the rule?

Do you (based on the bathroom floorplan):

a. Have the vanity wall, bathroom floor and door wall match/follow through the same, whilst the left wall and shower wall not line-up or;

b. Have all 4 walls match/line-up and the bathroom floor not line-up?

How best to tile them to "englarge" the space?
