Blockout or translucent blinds?

Stretching the friendship and reaching out to the Houzz community once again for window treatment advice!
In living room, we are having S fold sheers. The room is east facing.
We will need a blind as well - mainly for privacy at night and for that one hot month in Melbourne per year during the day.
Originally we were going blackout however now I’ve turned my mind from drapes to blinds, these seem like a great wall of flat colour to stare at every night (even if they are behind the sheers).
I’m now thinking translucent could be better as in my limited research, these do still provide some privacy at night when combined with the sheers and will also provide good UV blocking.
We are on the second floor and not facing into any apartments but houses on the street could look up and in theoretically.
Ultimately we’ll have planter boxes and we only really use uplights.
To summarize, there will be off white sheers in S Fold floor to ceiling and blinds will be closed each night for privacy.
So two questions:
- would you go translucent or blockout?
- if translucent, would you go off-white or charcoal?
I’ve attached a picture as we were able to get in to do an inspection today!

What style blockout curtain/blind would suit?
Comments (5)Yes, the steps are a small challenge. My suggestion is to work with that angle of the steps. If you would like full block out curtains, angle the hem of the curtains with the steps. With the width of the opening, and having the curtains pull to each side from the middle, there will be quite a bit of bunching. So I would suggest one curtain fitted across left hand window. Then the remainder of curtains pull from the door opening panel, back to the right. Comments (4)I have just bought a new house with black window frames, white walls and trim and the builder put black day/night blinds on every window. If you like blinds, they are very effective with total blackout at night and the sheer blind is good on a very sunny day to tame the glare. They look very neat and tidy so if you like the monochrome look, they work. Had I been able to select, I would have gone for a blind and a curtain over each and in a light colour as I prefer less contrast. 8 years agoI would be tempted to break away and have dark charcoal or black sheers with white block-out blinds, or even white blinds. I find black so moody and elegant. Just found these photos showing what it might look like. Just wanted to show you different options, but they may not suit you at all.

- 8 years agoAnn we have gone with drapes in the bedroom and just deciding between two colours. They’re a lovely velvet and we’ll get some blackout too.
