Need help with living room design

last modified: 8 years ago

Hi. I desperately need help with the design and color scheme for my living room.

We have bought a new navy blue sofa. The floor is white tiles. ( 2 x 2 feet ) .The wall painted Lily White.

I need to fit the following against a wall thats about 10 feet :

- Need advise on how to fit in a tv cabinet - also to hold some of my collectibles from travels.

- And to cover a DB box that is at the same wall.

I am rather color and design "blind". Have poured over tons of magazines and pictures. But still cant get it.

I plan to replace the current TV cabinet in tis picture.

The front view as we come into the living

.

really appreciate some design and color scheme ideas.

Purchase a low line tv entertainment unit. Your collectables can be displayed next to television. Place a print/painting over electrical box. Print should have a accent colour that is similar to your blue lounge. I think a larger rug that covers from the TVs unit to lounge, would be better. Tiles seem cold, a bigger floor rug will add warmth. You could purchase a small display cabinet, and put near stairs for your collectables.

Looking again at your photo, the space under stairs is ideal to display collectables.

Hi Greer, I am liking the suggestions of plants and hanging photos / frames. If you wanted to get some matching furniture you can use our website to create custom matching tables including perhaps a coffee table with some matching end / lamp tables and a matching sideboard / console. This would really tie everything together with a big rug and you can get them to fit your proportions as you can select the exact size and 40 top colours. http://tableanddesk.com.au/End-Table

Other colours that work with red are turquoise, apricot, peach, any blues, yellow, even some pinks and greens. (Look to gardens for inspiration, or Old Masters paintings). I'd find patterns with combinations of those, or Vys colours, in a rug, and chairs or cushions.

Dark wall looks great, as does the square set ceiling. Great starting point. Whatever lounge you get, make sure it's leather! So much easier to look after when you have children of any age group! My 20 year old drops more crap than the 15 year old does.... Go for a modern classic design so it suits the existing room and won't fall out of fashion (fad). A quality piece should last for decades and always look great. I like julie herberts chosen pictures, I'm no interior designer but I think they're pretty good and on point!

Hi there I would swap the TV to the other side of the room and place a lounge where the TV was for better flow through the room, and wall mount the TV good luck cheers (PS I know that you would need to move TV connections but would be worth it)

    Tq so much.

    Suggestions on rug color ?

The curtains are lighr nude in color ...

Depends on your budget what you will buy but I think tv unit that you can easily move around is better option than wall hang. You can get display cabinets to match tv unit for your collection (I don’t know how big it is) look in IKEA catalog Hemnes range it’s all timber and reasonably priced. Definitely get a large rug 2x3m and swap the layout as suggested before.

The picture of wall cabinet was just an example of elongated cabinet. There are plenty at local retail furniture stores that are not wall hung.

Example of cabinets. Low line would be less obtrusive in area.

Thanks so much. Appreciate the ideas and suggestions.

wat wld b a better choice in terms of color ?

For the tv cabinets and the rug ?

Really is personal preference for rug colour. Your lounge is a wonderful colour. With the light walls and light curtains you could go with something like these pictures. Keep with a lighter coloured wood.

    Hi Rengwir,
I think a modular tv unit with shelves and storage for your collection would be great, a coffee table , a gorgeous rug, matching cushions

Add a beautiful throw, floor lamp, you could change tv to other wall as siriuskey suggested which could look great and open up the space

And that rug is really gorgeous !

Any idea where i cld shop for it ? And the cushions too ?

What options do I have if I was to move the TV elsewhere ? Where can i place it best ?

The start of this space is the entrance into the living which stretches till the staircase.

On the right of the blue sofa is a small dining space.

Should i try to put a tv cabinet with back to the entrance ?

    Hi Rengwir,
Try Miss Amara for rugs, pottery barn /Adairs/freedom for cushions even Ebay.
Are you able to take a few more photos from different angles of room so we can get a bit better idea of space.

I m thinking of repainting the dining set. Or have new covers.

nows its the original nyatoh colors.( reddish brown ).

to the right of the dining area is the kitchen and to the left of the dining is the study.

    Hi Rengwir,
Thank you for the extra photos, I think softening the colours in your room with rug and cushions could look great, a gorgeous artwork in your dining area, as it looks pretty busy there painting your setting may be a bit troublesome (chipping) staining would be much better, jap black to match door frames could look great, you have some great cupboards in study for your collection, a gorgeous piece on a coffee table ( like first post) could look fab, great kitchen

As my previous suggestion, place elongated tv unit along wall. Place lounges at right angles to tv. Maybe place two small accent chairs facing tv, if required. Purchase large print/painting to cover electrical box. A display cabinet for under the stairs for your collectables. A round light wood colour coffee table. Keep with neutral tones, with hints of the blue from your lounge. The rugs oskuee have shown would work well. They will bring in texture and warm up flooring. The wood colour of dining chairs, in my opinion, is too dark. If you can spray paint a lighter colour, that would look better. I think if you keep with light woods, then creams and shades of blue/aqua/light pastel green, then your home will look wonderful.

    Hi Rengwir,
As your front door opens onto your room, instead of existing curtain you could add a stylish screen divider anchoring it to the wall that the tv is on, this will give definition to entry and entry into room, could look great

Hi Julie, i found the rug. ! :) they hv such a lovely collection.

i still like the mirage :) . Could u pls suggest a runner too that i cld place at the entrance .. that wld go with this rug ?

Am soo excited. Looks like i am almost getting there .. after mths of not knowing what to do. Thanks to amazing feedback from u guys !

Dear dreamer, am still assessing the layout for the living room. Would u have some pictures on the above layout suggestions - so i can better visualise it ?

And the cream / blue / aqua / light green scheme ? Some pictures ?

Can that go with the Mirage rug ? And with the cushions Julie had suggested above - the ones in blue/aqua/green/white ?

Or these would belong to different color schemes and wont mix and blend well....

sorry.. am stumped when it comes to mix and blends.

So glad you found the rug, it is a terrific sale price, did they have anything to match, they could recommend one that will compliment the Mirage, it is one of the nicest rugs, such beautiful colours will look gorgeous with your couch .

    Julie,

My space is not very big .. would the use of the divider make it smaller ? If i separate the entry from the living ? Entry is about 5 feet.

And the living to the staircase is about 16 feet.

I earlier considered a settee here , thinking i could put a table behind it -facing the entrance... not sure whether that wld look inviting tho.

    Rengwir,
Maybe a single screen would look good, just enough to define entry without blocking it off, have you tried one of your couches across that way to give you an idea of how it feels and looks,
Ebay have some lovely cushions at very reasonable prices, search ‘hamptons blue cushions’, it will all come together beautifully,

This could work maybe, I don’t think it would cut down on space, could look lovely seeing through it, and it will cast a gorgeous light.

Hi Rengwir, lots of great ideas and the extra photos really helped to see the shape of your space. One think I would lve to see is the curtains removed and replaced with white timber shutters with wide blades. it would simplify and lighten the entrance cheers

Hi Rengwir, I have a attached a photo which will visually give you the set up of lounge. If you can imagine a a lesser scale for your home. I agree with the white shutters on windows. And maybe a hall stand against the lounge that has its back to the front door. This would then create an entry. I think that the rug you have chosen would blend in perfectly with lounges. I will keep looking for other pictures.

Hi, I have looked at your photos, and with the dark door frames, thought you might like to embrace that colouring? I have attached photo which has colours that are already in your room, that would be difficult to change, ie: door frames. with adding light cushions, rug and artwork, would keep room light. With white shutters on front windows and Painting your dining setting black, as previously suggested. This is completely different to the other colour palette I have previously posted. But, thought I would share my thoughts.
