They are leaning on the wall and look as though they may be destabilising the whole wall to the point that it may fall over. If you removed all of the top heavy plants on the inside and then had a simple hedge that is a bit higher than the wall itself so that you get a solid green above the wall, then this green would break up the monotony of the wall. Keeping the weeds away from the base of the wall would also help, tho this is not too bad. You could paint the lattice but once you do this you have ongoing maintenance. You could paint it a bright, bold marine blue or yellow based red/orange, but as stated, the maintenance is then ongoing. I would look at the structure of the wall to ensure that it is stable before doing anything. Alison...See MoreWhat should I do with this kitchen?
Comments (8)Hi Claire, It really depends what your budget is. If you can't live with the current look until you can afford a total refit, I would agree with girlguides. A lick of paint and new bench tops will bring this baby into the now. Laminex has a new bench top range that looks great and fits the "budget" brief. A couple of pendant lights over the bench top would look good as would some thick floating shelving above the microwave...better yet, if you can stretch to some new cabinetry to get the microwave off the bench, that would free up some bench space and improve function. I actually like the brick! I was doing a houzz search for a solution to one of my many dilemmas and saw an island with brick ends. It looked amazing! Good luck!...See MoreHow do I make this ugly house look better?
Comments (15)First - fix the proportions. remove the square hedge and possibly second hedge in front of the window. The fence on the right should be moved back in line with edge of house as it is making things look out of proportion. Colours - You need more contrast - keep the bricks, paint the garage darker, maybe charcoal. The arch - The arch around the entry is a bit off putting - I think it is because it is blocking view of the door. Could it be removed? If not, might first idea is to add some malibu wood paneling near the door or make a little wooden entry deck in the malibu. Second idea is to grow some vines or greenery on it. and remove the three little scrubs. Or instead of vines add two big potted plants on each side of the arch to make it more welcoming. Hope that helps Best of luck...See MoreExterior refresh of ugly dark brick - need a plan. Tx
Comments (11)Thanks bigreader & potsy99. I agree it is heavy. We pulled the purple/bullring from the brick. The house is very long/horizontal. Potsy99 might be onto something about painting the chamfer boards above the garage, and the timber door being lighter might break that up a bit. I really struggle with the warm pavers and wish the previous owners had done a grey based paver. I feel it would have complemented the brick better. Colours I was entertaining for the roof are: Colorbond: Surfmist, Dune, Paperbark, Evening Haze. As much as I do love Ironstone, I feel a dark colour would a) be too heavy, and b) be too hot. I wonder if Ironstone (which would work/complement the rendered retaining wall) on the garage doors and gutters/facia boards would work, and do the roof a lighter colour - Surfmist/Dune/Paperbark? I just struggle with classic cream. Oh, and my mum lives with me, and she has VERY strong opinions about warm colours, and everyone is entitled to hear them. :/ Again, thanks........See More- 7 years ago
