External claddings : 3 colours palette

I installed james hardie claddings on external walls and picked 3 dulux colors and hoping for greyish effect :

Wayward grey

Ito

Tranquil retreat (yet to be painted)

due to the nature of the claddings (yellowish beige), the paint did not turn out expected

- waywayrd grey turned into brownish

- Ito turned into blueish

Would these new combo be better combo:

a) Ito changed to monument

b) wayward grey (hope to get lighter brown to balance monument)

c) tranquil retreat

my decking meant to be grey and turned into blueish too

Was the cladding pre primed from the factory? Have you used acrylic paint? Have you painted two coats?

Only one cost but hesitated to go for second coat. yes to pre primed and no acrylic paint

Cost is not necessarily a big issue as some would expect. The cost's may not be that much different, many say it's more but forget to say by how much....... Some 'standard' but exceptional quality aluminium window and door systems are way more expensive than timber. Some other aluminium systems are quite poor in every aspect, apart from the glazing itself. Not really comparing apples with apples as the quality varies considerably and is quite complicated with so many manufacturers all offering various products at various thermal performance levels. Even some well known brands can be quite poor performing..... requiring double glazing where a comparably priced product but better quality only needs single..... Buyer beware! Window systems are becoming more of a priority during design than ever before. I'd shop around and get costings first rather than giving them boot just yet in particular if you really love them. Maintenance is really just painting (every 5 years?) or oiling the timber. Just keeping everything cleaned goes a long way to lowering the workload. Also being brick, that has reduced your workload again allowing some extra time to look after and admire the timber which you'll be looking at everyday when inside or out.

Thank you so much, Julie. I thought you would be interested in the end result, given how much encouragement and advice you so generously gave me. :-) I do love it. It has made such a difference and I think (fingers crossed) the landscaping will give it the finishing touch. We are reroofing the pergola, so will post photos when that is completed. The gazebo looks great after its facelift, too.

Hi Lindel Love the design and view! There are a couple of solutions here, depending on what the requirements are (ie cost versus energy efficiency). To your original query, the Colorbond will give a better maintenance long term but obviously the energy efficiency is zilch. The structure behind needs to do the insulation work as well as be structural. From a cost point of view timber framing is cheaper but the wall insulation is limited. You can however use a structural insulated panel to be both the structure as well as the insulation for everything from the upper floor to the walls and roof.... We are doing an extension in this at present which will actually look like a 1930's character style to match the existing home. I'm not familiar with your BAL but we have found that when we get such high insulation ratings from the walls and roof it has usually enabled us to cover the losses from windows and given the ability to have larger windows without the need for double glazing. Regarding the timber, I would be considering an artificial product unless you want to do the maintenance. Cheers

Probably best to limit your palette of colours. I would go with a paint colour that matches the Colorbond Mangrove colour as it will complement the brickwork, work well with your planting, and not be a feature - you need a colour that recedes into the background as tour brickwork is the feature. Check with your supplier. I thought that you had to use acrylic paint...?

My understanding of colours is that all greys either have a red (ie brown/warm) undertone or a blue cool undertone. Have you just chosen two shades of grey with opposing undertones?

This will be more obvious if you put something purely red vs pure mid-blue. Try painting the two colours on a piece of A4 paper and holding it up next to different cool or warm colours inside the house under different lighting.

I went to the Dulux site and the colour mix for Ito is Colour Values R:102 G:104 B:112 (more Blue) and for Wayward grey it is Colour Values R:63 G:60 B:62 R & B are basically the same. Not sure that helps, but for each colour, Dulux give similar colours that they suggest as pairings. Maybe decide which of the greys you prefer and then go with one of the Dulux compliments????

I think the colours look lovely, but I don't know what effect you are after.

i was hoping to get more blacn undertone and i went yo dulux and realised they only have red and blue too i guess its my own expectations i need to manage
