Entry Flooring Design Dilemma

Patterned Tile Help

Hi, I’m using this tile inside my house in my power room and laundry floor and I really want to use a patterned tile outside too, on my alfresco floor and front verandahs. Is it a big no no to mix patterned floor tiles on the same level or is it ok? Should I stick to the same patterned tile throughout?

Have what ever makes you happy. Your guests and family will see the alfresco and outdoor areas the most. Hopefully you won’t have them working in the laundry. So no it doesn’t matter if the tiles don’t match in pattern or colour. Just make sure the external tiles are the correct slip rating for outside.

I think its ok as long as they aren't next to each other.

I think she may have been referring to what is called a "French Pattern" which looks like a random mixture of square and rectangle tiles, often in travertine. However while it looks random it is actually carefully planned, and the tiles are made to a consistent thickness. It also depends on the type of tile that you are using. Many traditionally hand-made ceramic tiles have a natural variation, which adds to their appeal and visual interest. Other types of tiles, such as your porcelains are much squarer, flatter and almost identical. I would suggest that you go with your your choice of grid pattern, as laying a random pattern has too many risks (plus your tiler will hate you and charge lots extra). Be very careful about the selection of your tiles depending on your preference for a rustic more organic look, or a hard-edged architectural look. Make sure that the surface that you are tiling to has been properly prepared and is flat, smooth and true, as your tiler will not be able to correct imperfections if you have a bad wall. I think patterned tiles should be used like jewels in smaller spaces. They are a large investment and will date and can be overwhelming in larger areas. You need to consider your patterns as part of the larger picture of flooring and decor in your house. Try and minimise the variety of flooring in your house, and think what it will look like with furniture and art.
