Our brief was to create a calm, modern country kitchen that avoided cliches - and to intrinsically link to the garden. A weekend escape for a busy family who come down to escape the city, to enjoy their art collection, garden and cook together. The design springs from my neuroscience research and is based on appealing to our hard wired needs, our fundamental instincts - sociability, easy movement, art, comfort, hearth, smells, readiness for visitors, view of outdoors and a place to eat. The key design innovation was the use of soft geometry, not so much in the planning but in the three dimensionality of the furniture which grows out of the floor in an organic way. The soft geometry is in the profile of the pieces, not in their footprint. The users can stroke the furniture, lie against it and feel its softness, all of which helps the visitors to kitchen linger and chat. The fireplace is located in the middle between the cooking zone and the garden. There is plenty of room to draw up a chair and just sit around. The fold-out doors let the landscape into the space in a generous way, especially on summer days when the weather makes the indoors and outdoors come together. The sight lines from the main cooking and preparation island offer views of the garden throughout the seasons, as well as people coming into the room and those seating at the table - so it becomes a command position or what we call the sweet spot. This often results in there being a family competition to do the cooking. The woods are Canadian Maple, Australian rosewood and Eucalyptus. All appliances are Gaggenau and Fisher and Paykel.

Many contemporary kitchens, whether they’re in a newly built or renovated property, are multifunctional spaces for family living and entertaining. Our designer designed an L-shape layout that the whole family could enjoy, with an island at the heart. As the kitchen looks out over the beautiful countryside, she made sure the furniture layout made the best of this by facing prep areas or seating towards the view. Creating an indoor/outdoor living space means that dinner parties can extend outside into the garden, and all of your entertaining essentials are still close to hand.

Tournant le dos à la terrasse malgré la porte-fenêtre qui y menait, l’agencement de la cuisine de ce bel appartement marseillais ne convenait plus aux propriétaires. La porte-fenêtre a été déplacée de façon à se retrouver au centre de la façade. Une fenêtre simple l’a remplacée, ce qui a permis d’installer l’évier devant et de profiter ainsi de la vue sur la terrasse.. Dissimulés derrière un habillage en plaqué chêne, le frigo et les rangements ont été rassemblés sur le mur opposé. C’est le contraste entre le papier peint à motifs et la brillance des zelliges qui apporte couleurs et fantaisie à cette cuisine devenue bien plus fonctionnelle pour une grande famille !. We love this Shaker kitchen that we installed in Surrey. It has perfect symmetry and a serene colour scheme of greys & blues. The island is painted in Hicks Blue and the perimeter cupboards in Slaked Lime Mid - both by Little Greene. The polished chrome hardware by Armac Martin is a perfect companion to the overall look of the kitchen and matches well with the sink, tap, and appliances which are a silver finish too.

This design boasts it's own private bar area which features a windsor grey quartz worktop and light grey cabinets, providing a practical use of the alcove by creating a seating area, and influenced by copper lighting and accessories, while the cabinetry hides a preparation area hidden by pocket doors. A tall bank of units boxed in by stud walls to create a unique built in look. The kitchen houses Neff slide and hide eye level ovens, a wine cooler, ceiling extraction and an induction hob.

We wanted to design a kitchen that would be sympathetic to the original features of our client's Georgian townhouse while at the same time function as the focal point for a busy household. The brief was to design a light, unfussy and elegant kitchen to lessen the effects of the slightly low-ceilinged room. Jack Trench Ltd responded to this by designing a hand-painted kitchen with echoes of an 18th century Georgian farmhouse using a light Oak and finishing with a palette of heritage yellow.
