Moonee Ponds

By stripping away the older build up of mis-matched spaces and rooms and introducing a new, unmistakeably contemporary addition, the house steps gracefully into the current day. The front rooms have been restored entirely, with hard plaster repairs and restored fireplaces complimented by modern fixtures and fittings. The new slate roofing caps off a carefully maintained elegant appearance to the street, that doesn't need to shout about its looks.

Beyond that, there is a journey into a more contemporary space. Walking down the corridor, the design is intended to lead the eye always to the views of the garden and the sky, with glimpses of the hidden views along the way. The new lobby purposely crouches down to create a sense of comfort before stepping back up to high ceilings, full height openings and dramatic staircases that make more of the everyday moments happening within this space. The verandah structure, courtyards and windows give distinct and dramatic plays of light and shadow to different areas throughout the day and year.

Formally, the ground floor reflects a solid a frame for which a lighter, more discrete upper floor balances upon. The shiplap spotted gum provides a reassurance to the building that is soft, and dynamic, whilst the super insulated upper floor contrasts this with a sense of light an openness difficult to achieve on tight urban blocks.

The layout is designed to offer flexibility for years to come as well. Effectively, the house can functions as two independent parts, with separate entries and distinct spaces, but also offering spaces that feel appropriate for large gatherings or intimate moments.
