Northcote Bathroom
Ensuite Featured In House & Garden Magazine September 2020
I had previously done major work on most of this Northcote home, but the ensuite of the master bedroom remained an outlier. It needed a design overhaul to bring it into line with the rest of the house. The brief was to create a luxurious hotel feel similar to the 5-star bathrooms this jet-setting couple had enjoyed during their travels.
Because the ensuite ran off the master bedroom, I wanted to ensure the dark, moody aesthetic of the bedroom flowed through. Luckily no major structural changes were required, so this project was solely about finding and employing the correct fixtures, fittings and tiles.
First I sourced a wonderful marble-looking porcelain tile. This tile was laid on the main wall, as well as in the shower recess. A soft sandstone tile was then laid for the floor, and for all other walls, I used corrugated porcelain tiles.
Next I designed a pair of custom vanity units, to be set against the marble porcelain tile feature wall. They were designed to resemble furniture items so that they would look light in the space. Within I included deep drawers for storage.
I employed black fittings everywhere, even down to the inclusion of a black WC and black ceiling downlights. These helped to boost the profile of the tile feature wall and acted as a delightful contrast to the floor tiles. To boost the effect of the black further, I added four bronze wall lights, imported from the United States.
In short, the brief to create a luxurious hotel out of an ensuite bathroom was met. Now my clients can feel like they are travelling, and in singular style, even when in the comfort of home.
