Just the thought of decorating can be enough to put us off of starting a project but, before you veto the idea, it’s worth remembering that painting is one of the most low-cost ways to make a big impact. And it doesn’t have to be a huge project, either – sometimes, just painting a few small details can transform a scheme.
So, how and where do you start? Check out these 21 easy ideas for every room to get you feeling inspired to make that difference.

Make an Entrance
1. Add kerb appeal by painting your front door in a colour of your choice and set the mood for visitors before they’ve even stepped over the threshold. Opt for your favourite pastel shade for a pretty look, a more timeless hue for a classic property, or for instant impact you can’t go wrong with a bright red or vibrant yellow.

- Painting your stairs might seem like an obvious option, but it’s worth thinking about which part of your stairs you want painted. For example, you may want to decorate just the risers, or the treads, or cover the full staircase, including the banisters, in the same bold colour. You could also try painting the stairs in an ombre effect, with the paint colour growing darker from top to bottom.
- Stuck with a dark hallway or staircase? Why not use one of the latest on-trend neutrals to lighten it up? White isn’t the only colour that will do the trick – there’s a whole palette of light tones out there, from grey-greens to fresh pinky tones. Hallway walls can often be marked or scuffed, so make sure you go for a paint that is designed for heavy-use areas.
- If your hallway features a number of doors, why not try painting the frames and/or the doors in a different colour? Go for a darker shade than your wall colour for a cohesive look or make a statement by using a standout colour that makes a feature of them. Alternatively, go for a half and half look on the walls, as shown above.
Show Your Living Room Some Love
5. If you’re happy with your wall colour but want to update it, then why not look at your trims? From the skirting boards to the dado and picture rails, you can use these to add an accent colour to your scheme.
6. They say the windows are the eyes to our homes, so keep them looking their best with a fresh coat of paint, either in a complementary shade or standout colour.
7. Creating ‘zones’ in an open-plan space is easy with paint, so be creative and give your individual areas the attention they deserve. Use different colours for the walls to separate the spaces or try painting a square or shape on one wall to set that area apart. You could even paint a ‘rug’ shape on the floor underneath a table to ground the dining area.
8. Tired of your room scheme but don’t want to decorate the entire space? Why not paint a feature wall instead? Whether it’s one large wall, a chimneybreast or alcove, pick your chosen shade for that area and use masking tape to ensure you get a crisp, clean finish.
9. The ceiling is our fifth wall but it’s often forgotten about, when in actual fact it can be used to create the overall effect you’d like for your room. Opt for a lighter colour to make the walls of your room seem higher, or a darker shade for a cosy, enveloping feel.

Get Creative in the Kitchen
10. Whether you’ve inherited splashback tiles that aren’t to your taste, or you’re after a colour refresh, use tile paint to change the colour and give your kitchen a brand new look.
11. Replacing cabinet doors can be expensive, so before you go down that route, try sprucing them up with a lick of paint first. You can always go for a different colour for base and wall units, or paint an island in a standout shade.
12. Paint is a great way to revive damaged or tired-looking benchtops – just make sure to use one that is specifically designed for heavy-use surfaces.

Make Your Office Feel Like Home
13. Who says a home office can’t be bright and decorative? Paint a block colour behind your desk to give it a fun backdrop.
14. Already have your office furniture? Simply paint your desk or chair legs to add that much-needed splash of colour.

Create a Soothing Bedroom
15. It’s important to have a calm zone when it comes to your bedroom, so have a think about which colours you find soothing and decorate in that palette.
16. Make a change from the usual headboard and paint one behind your bed instead. It doesn’t just have to be a square either – go for a scalloped or curvy shape for extra wow factor. Alternatively, create a standout feature wall behind the bed by choosing a bold paint colour, such as the on-trend inky hue pictured.
17. Paint any shelves to match your wall colour and they’ll blend in rather than stand out. Add accessories in similar tones for a harmonious scheme.

Be Bold in the Bathroom
18. Looking for a bathroom makeover without the hassle? Upgrade your tiles with a coat of paint. Choose a tile paint that requires no primer to make application a cinch, and you’ll have a stunning, durable and chip-resistant finish that looks great, too.
19. Whether you opt for a bold and bright colour or something more tranquil, make sure the paint you choose is suitable for a bathroom and works well in humid areas.

Take Colour Outdoors
20. Choose an outdoor paint to withstand the elements and use it for exterior walls, cladding or sheds and outbuildings.
21. Paint your existing pots and planters and bring a new lease of life to your garden. Go for varying tones of the same colour for a cohesive look or paint the rims of each pot in the same shade for a smaller way of bringing colour to your outdoor space. Spray paints are ideal for jobs like this – just make sure to spray outdoors or in a well ventilated room.
