I'm about to go on a 3 week holiday. What tips do you have for shutting up my house? Should I turn off the fridge, water etc. What would you recommend as your handy holiday shut up check list.
If you live in an area with frost, don't turn the heat lower than 14C. Keep the radiator pump on, to prevent goo in the pipes from settling in your machine. Keep washing machine and dryer door open. Indeed unplug most electrics, especially computers and big appliances. Have your post and newspapers frequently removed from the box/doormat. Empty bins and water plants (or have them watered) We always turn down the water, just in case (and open the taps for half a minute when you get home to refresh all water in the system) Safety: door and window locks, one or two lamps on a timer (evenings). You could turn of the fridge, but if there's some food in it, leaving it on won't cost a fortune, since it will be closed all the time. Give your number and a spare key to a trusted friend/neighbour. Bring your passport and keys (and money and ticket). Happy holiday!
