What is more modern curtains or blinds?
We have just renovated and ended with a great looking, very modern apartment. We are now down to the question if we should install curtains or blinds throughout the whole apartment... Both my husband and I wanted to live in an apartment with great curtains perhaps even with headers ... But our designer friend says that curtains are dated/traditional and do not go in modern style appartments?! He insists on double roller blinds and my husband is devastated. I had a look on HOUZZ and there are some great looking curtains that we loved. Could you please shed some light in the dilemma .... Can one do curtains in the very modern looking apartment? We have open plan living area, toddler room and bedroom? I attached some photos of the colour scheme. Thank you so much in advance!!!!

Comments (10)It's a bit difficult without an image to give me an idea of the areas you are wanting to treat and the overall look and style you are trying to maintain or enhance. Typically, curtains and Romans can work very well in combination within the same room and even with the same fabric as this image, I think, illustrates: The use of pelmets (box cornices) in combination with the curtain treatments and Romans help tie-in the two treatments and help balance the stronger shape, line and form of the Roman's on their own. I agree with @chookchook2, the use of coordinated fabrics is preferable, if that is an option that is open to you. Also notable with this image is the use of a Roman and curtain in the same window treatment. Another example of the use of curtains in combination with Romans. In Australia, it is unusual to have unlined Romans. Soft traditional lined Romans are more typical here, and please ensure that the Romans you purchased are lined with pre-stiffened proper Roman lining and not the much cheaper curtain lining which can lead to 'sagging' over time. Comments (17)Please don't install verticals. You have such a beautiful home, I strongly believe drapes will look amazing. With curtains you want to install them as high as possible, I would install on the same level as your kitchen cabinetry, so about 10cm below the ceiling cornice. Colour, I recommend two shades darker or lighter to give the room dimension. I feel a classic look will last you a lifetime so a plain coloured drape, and if I were you I would add a border in another neutral colour to further add interest. Comments (11)To add texture and softness to a room i would always recommend a curtain.. For bedrooms I always recommend a blockout with a sheer curtain hung very close to the cornice .. Depending on the “fall” of the fabric.. ( how it sits) your window treatment professional will recommend a style ( double pinch pleat, reverse pleat, s fold) but they will recommend the best pleat to showcase the fabric you choose .. However here is a cheap but smart alternative. Firstly.. very rarely do I hang either curtains or blinds within the window “reveal” I always go at least a minimum of 150mm above the window for blinds and generally always up to the cornice for the curtains. When you hang in the reveal you lose the height and a portion of the view.. You want to highlight a view so this is why I’m suggesting it! Plus it always makes your room look bigger. But .. if this is not for you then Alternatively you can get a sunscreen blind hung within the reveal and hang a curtain above roughly 150mm about be the reveal. The curtain should “frame” the window on either side of the window frame wall .. NOT covering a good portion of the window.. you want most of the fabric to sit in the wall when open. The combo blind / curtain is your most economical.. But I have always always hung curtains in bedrooms without fail.. Comments (9)Yes an external blind will interrupt that wonderful second story view, if it has to be down all day. There is not a deck outside that window, so a vergola would not be easy to install, unless it is double storey height. A fixed awning may work. But may have to be large to cover the part of window that is letting sun onto stairs. REtractable awnings, may have times, that they can not be extended because of strong winds. Here is our old place which was a fairly modern apartment, although not as modern as you've fitted out yours (looks great by the way!). This also helped block additional light let in by the timber venetians when a Sunday morning sleep-in was required! If only they were a few cm's longer to get the "just brushing" look we were going for.
PRO8 years agoHello, We sell both so I have no reason to suggest one over the other. However, yes Roller blinds are very functional and right on trend for a modern decor. He is absolutely correct. Its not just the window furnishings that create softness to a room. You could even automate them for about the same cost as buying curtains. We do a lot of homes with double roller blinds right thought. However if you like curtains there is nor reason you shouldn't have them. Its your home and you need to love been there. It really comes down to picking the right fabrics and pleat types to work with your look. Blinds are great in smaller spaces and can achieve a clean lined open look wheres curtains can soften a room and add warmth .. be ware that curtains can close a room in and make it appear smaller. It can also make furniture placement difficult. Might I suggest a mix? Sheer curtains hung from the ceiling with a roller blinds behind can look very sleek in apartments. You can have the best of both :) I would just suggest you don't go with anything too "fussy" keep the lines clean and don't go to full with your curtains. You don't want lots of fabric cluttering your room.

A child's room with a mix of rollers and Chain Drive Roman Blinds. Great for reducing daytime heat. Day time privacy and the roman Blinds is block out to help them sleep. Roman Blinds are great for kids rooms as the add softness, are practical and you can place furniture below the windows.
