Should we have curtains or blinds in this bedroom?

Bedroom – curtains or blinds?

We have just gotten our bedroom painted (a nice light grey) and have Colorbond Monument Aluminum windows in the corner of the room.

We need to decide how to best dress the window - it has a nice leafy view as it faces the street.

We work in the week so would need at least sheers covering them in the day. Could have sheers with blinds or sheers with curtains?

Ignore the wood furniture - we will eventually upgrade. Going for modern/neutral.

Window 210 height, 233.5cm to ceiling.

To add texture and softness to a room i would always recommend a curtain..

For bedrooms I always recommend a blockout with a sheer curtain hung very close to the cornice ..

Depending on the “fall” of the fabric.. ( how it sits) your window treatment professional will recommend a style ( double pinch pleat, reverse pleat, s fold) but they will recommend the best pleat to showcase the fabric you choose ..

However here is a cheap but smart alternative.

Firstly.. very rarely do I hang either curtains or blinds within the window “reveal” I always go at least a minimum of 150mm above the window for blinds and generally always up to the cornice for the curtains.

When you hang in the reveal you lose the height and a portion of the view..

You want to highlight a view so this is why I’m suggesting it!

Plus it always makes your room look bigger.

But .. if this is not for you then
Alternatively you can get a sunscreen blind hung within the reveal and hang a curtain above roughly 150mm about be the reveal.

The curtain should “frame” the window on either side of the window frame wall .. NOT covering a good portion of the window.. you want most of the fabric to sit in the wall when open.

The combo blind / curtain is your most economical..

But I have always always hung curtains in bedrooms without fail..

It gives you that element of texture and luxe that is very hard to beat!!

To maintain maximum light and outlook with your current furniture placement, I would go with sheers and blinds. However, you could have sheers and curtains if the timber furniture is able to be shifted further away from the window, so as to allow for the curtains to be pulled back fully from the window (curtain rail wider than the window opening).

Hi Katrina,
Some windows/rooms will lend themselves to a particular type of window treatment and thus one will become a better choice for those set of circumstances. Other drivers will be the particular requirements for the window treatments, taste and budget.

Curtains will require more fabric, provide a cosier feel, can block out more light - but if the current/future furniture can’t be moved from the current location (to provide a stackback area) then blinds would be a better option.

Both can have a modern style with the appropriate fabric choice, how they are designed and finished, and for curtains the style of rod/track/finials selected.

Hi Georgina, We have a tv in the bedroom of the little home we're living in whilst building and we have made allowance for it again in the new home and in the bathroom!!! It definitely saves on heating and lighting in winter as you simply go to bed early and the only light on is the tv glowing. We're installing a spa bath, really just a huge bathtub with jets in our bathroom and I"m going to watch Better Homes & Gardens in my bath if it kills me ha-ha Hubby hates the show and I can never watch it when he's in early, so some candles a cruiser and I'm laughing, literally ha-ha Love it and I say yes go for it!!!

I actually love the combination of timber, jute, rattan or patterned blinds with white sheer curtains. It's especially lovely if you want the option of either blocking light or letting the most in without letting your windows look too naked. These photos may help you decide:

I would leave it as is with a few tweaks. Put in bifold doors, guessing you have flies and mossies so some pull out fly screens or any flyscreens. Build a little stud wall with gyproc to hide the edge of the dresser, done right it should just look like the existing wall. I’ve done it before, just a cheap weekend job. Paint everything, Whisper white, will be lovely against the background of trees. Then furnish outside with some comfy furniture that you love. 1. The reason I wouldn’t close it in is because your bedroom looks a pretty good size. 2. Cost wise, it would be heaps more. 3. You won’t be able to hose the windows or sweep the cobwebs without the balcony. 4. The sun might hit the windows without the balcony and now you have the luxury of no curtains. 5.if you extend you will need to worry about insulation and flooring etc. 6. I love your balcony, I think you might miss it. Maybe add a bird feeder as well as your comfy furniture, sit back and enjoy.

please clarify the size of the windows and sliding doors.. your post says window is 160 x 66? and what are you aiming to achieve...we need to see floor plans and photos of the existing space to understand the problem better...will the curtain over the window be full length to match the sliding doors is the sliding door and window next to each other, separated by a section of wall or on different walls and do you want the curtains to block light or views or? and what sort of windows are they.. double hung, awning, sliding?? if there is a spearte window with as eparte patterned curtain and you want to increase black out property and keep easy access to ethe window i would widen the track and curtain as much as possible to make to make it wider than the window and add a separate lining curtain that can be hung off the same hooks as the patterned curtains

Plantation shutters could look great, day night roller blinds are lovely, vertisheers are very elegant, luxaflex twist would add a very modern look to your room and look great from outside.

It seems like you might need some daytime privacy so I would suggest sunscreen roller blind that gives you light and you can see outside and heavy blockout curtains hang high up from the cornice for night time privacy and insulation.

it really depens on your budget. its a living room I guess, and street facing, so you may not need a blackout solution,

Luxury way is to go Plantation Shutters and cheaper way is roller blind with translucent fabric or double roller with both translucent and blackout

Plantation Shutters will do both privacy and light control in the day, based on your 2.1 high, I guess its about 1.5 meter wide, roughy will cost you $800 for each windows,

The roller blind will cost you $180 each for single

I would go blockout curtains behind sheers. We did this for our street facing bedroom and very glad we did. They offer daytime privacy and the blockout curtains do not let light through. However we had them installed wall to wall and floor to ceiling, with enough wall stackback so the blackouts do not cover any part of the window when open. Hope this makes sense

I agree with many of the comments however perhaps consider a textured sheer like Warwick Fabrics 'Amalfi Ivory' 100% linen for the curtains. Height should be as close to the cornice as possible to create the illusion of height and wide enough to be drawn back either side of the window just to cover each frame. Don't scrimp on fullness either. For economy consider block out roller blinds that discreetly fit into the window frame - perfect for night time.

I know they're not popular but venetians are terrific. Keep them dusted monthly and cleaning when they need it. They really aren't a problem and answer all your queries. I think curtains are a drag.

I like to consider function as a priority, so that questions about how you want these windows to work for you are important. For example, heating/cooling; view; privacy; ease of use. Based on that, what are the options that meet what you want - sheers for privacy; heavy curtains for room temperature control; etc. Then consider what works best for your use based on the dimensions and design of the room. With all that in mind, then consider what looks nice and a style to match your decor. While something attractive is important, if it doesn't do what you want, it soon becomes unappealing.
