Colour of bulkhead - ceiling, wall or cupboard?

Hello,
Hoping for some design advice with painting our kitchen. We are unsure what colour to paint the bulkhead (which is 230mm/9inch high). Should we paint it the same colour as the wall (cream - see wall to the left in photo), ceiling white, or the same white as the cupboards?

Paint the same colour as the walls, so it just continues around and doesn't make the bulkheads stand out, and gives you clean seamless finish.

Thanks for the comments. I don't mind making the cupboards higher but I am unsure what would look good. Should they be 1m, 1.2m? That will result in a smaller bulk head but the cupboards may look disproportionate compared to the base cupboards under the bench top. I have been looking for photos where the overhead cupboards are very tall but haven't found any.

What look are you hoping to achieve? When you say 'update' can you elaborate?This kitchen looks new. Compared to my old Barbie pink, laminate, falling apart beast, this is a dream! I personally would never paint a kitchen myself- especially not one like this. Lots of sharp edges means lots of future chips/scratches. If it is 2-pack poly you could get it resprayed. I can see scope to change the cabinet pulls, add a plant or 2 to the shelves, bigreaders suggestions about moulding are awesome. Even if you got a cabinet maker to pull out the open-shelves and replace them with a timber or timber-laminate as a contrast. All this would soften it and add personality. I can see your roller blind on the window- changing that to a roman blind with a pattern/texture/colour through it would add character too.

Looking again at photo. Are the non flush cupboards above your cooktop? If so, then that is probably why they are set back. When you are cooking, if cupboards are flush, there may be a head room issue. If this is where your cook top is, do you have a range hood installed in cabinets? Sorry, but the different set backs would bug me. Maybe install a large stainless steel rangehood, and remove cabinets.

I would love to see some photos of the house, interior and exterior. Where are you located and are there plenty of windows? Do you know what timber the floorboards are? If there is lots of direct sunlight onto the floorboards, this will reclect colour onto the walls so choosing the right "white" will be important. Did you want the one colour to go through the entire house? Are you wanting to keep the feel of the high ceilings or would you prefer to have them feel lower in some rooms? Regards, Bronwyn

sorry to disagree but I would take the ceiling colour down where there are cupboards

and put a splash of colour (eg vase etc) on the splashback area and declutter as much as possible. this way the eye is distracted from the hodgepodge of surface at the top of the kitchen and would simplifiy the area. It does need a little wow factor. jekka

Not sure if this picture is part of an open plan room but if not, I would give a great kick of contrast to the effect -for example charcoal grey or grey brown on ceiling if possible and down over the bulk head. It will give the effect of zing for your lovely white cupboards. It all depends how individual you are as it is with white white it is a little boring.

It all depends what kind of environment and feeling you want to create. IMHO, a kick of contrast will be great. A warm color to enhance the beautiful wood floors while bringing the cupboars to live. Tying down the room colors and giving a welcoming feeling. Keeping all white gives more of an industrial detached feeling. Would love to see the finished proyect if you care sharing some photos. :-)

I'd go the colour of the wall.

I love a white kitchen :) If you're looking for a point of difference, however, you could add some colourful cook books in the corner. You could also add little door knobs along the top cabinets, if you want, too help break them up a bit.

Although drastic, removing the cupboard doors above the fridge and filling with colourful cook books would also add a pop of colour. It would still be in keeping with your shaker style too. Although, I'm sure you've just spent a lot on those doors, lol.

Anyway, I think you've done a great job. It's a hard space to work with, small and u shaped. I can now appreciate the difficulties in working with an odd shaped kitchen! It's hard to get symmetry, so it limits what you can do.

I'm about to do a similar style kitchen and was wondering what colour you used on your cabinets? They look great :)

We went with same colour as wallpaint (dulux white duck) for bulk heads
