Timber flooring and timber ceiling. - too much?
Comments (20)Timber with timber can work brilliantly, and it's in keeping with the mid century style you want for your home. This room (below) is a little similar to yours, albeit with less of a pitch to the roof - the large feature lighting helps to break up the expanse of timber on the ceiling. You have a lovely open plan area, so I'd be inclined to use rugs to create zones and a cosy feel. Rugs reduce the impact of a large expanse of flooring material. They have the benefit that you can swap things around to change the look and layout at little cost. I think one trick may be to define your "walls" carefully, and paint these before you go with a new floor. This should give you a sense of whether the timber is overwhelming, and how to balance it. E.g. You might decide it works best to paint the kitchen cupboards to white, to give you a more seamless look and work with your new counter tops. If you want to experiment with the "paint ceiling" approach - gulp, it's a big one!! - then maybe that small section above the kitchen bench, at a different angle to the rest of the roof, could be the spot. It seems to have the same horizontal line as the wall, so even if you don't like the painted look for the whole, you might be able to get away with blending this into the walls. Best of luck!...See MoreToo much monument!
Comments (12)Is having the bottom floor doors and windows timber ever an option on a new build? Maybe not? I think you should do whatever feels right for you, though perhaps it means breaking with tradition. I can imagine using Surfmist or wallaby colour window frames with a monument house (not sure they have wallaby in windows though) and doing something unique?! A safe bet is the monument window frame and I am sure it will be powerful but amazing too. Your windows will frame the landscape so well....See MoreWhat to do with internal brick walls HELP!
Comments (9)What a cool house design! Off the top of my head, I think I'd be inclined to paint the brick surrounding the sliding door (1st image) and either paint the pillars or clad them in same timber as the ceiling just inside that same sliding door (1st image). I'd be tempted to leave the large wall as bigreader suggested simply because it's such a magnificent feature. If you live with it for a while then still not loving it, then paint it. While I like the chandelier, it doesn't really suit where it is, as Warren pointed out. If you wanted to change, best to consider if there are any other electrical changes you want to make and get an electrician out only the once. As far as paint colour goes, do you know what the current wall paint colour is?I'd paint to match the wall colour and complement the carpet, but important to know if you like the current colour or want to change. Also it would help to know what your own plans for the interior style is. Do you want to remain true to the 80s with just a few tweaks, or change it completely? About the balustrade, do you want to change the colour of it as well? Is it also made out of glass (couldn't quite tell from photo)?...See MoreToo much concrete!
Comments (6)i think you may be pleasantly surprised how cheap quick and easy painting can be for concrete ...modern paints are so much better and properly prepared can last for many years and painted concrete would be very much in style with the original house and even a concrete colour paint will freshen up the look of the driveway and front verandah ...why not test paint a small section to see how it looks against the bricks ... another idea is to swop the porch fence for a porch roof, add a dark brick (matching the window sills) border around all the plain concrete after cleaning and add some big new shrubs and deeper garden beds around the front lawn to create a lush new front garden to create a view from inside...See More- 10 years ago
