Need Cladding Ideas

Hi, We are about to reno our new hobby farm homestead but need some ideas on exterior cladding. Windows will most likely change to timber and nicer front door. Happy to change/ paint everything else. The cladding at the moment is the fake flimsy stuff and is missing in sections - underneath we have cement or ply boards assuming in good condition. Please feel free to include suggestions for the decks/posts/gardens as well. TIA!

The weatherboard look suits so stay with that but maybe a recladd in an FC Weatherboard. Have a look at Scyon Linea. Which is a high performance version of Fibro Cement. Also use some architraves around windows and doors. A repaint will make a big change. I'm not a fan of blue blue I'm more a grey so look at 'Windspray' or 'Timeless Grey'. Paint the new architraves in white or 'Shale Grey'.

One other change I would make is landscaping. Have a professional do a design for you this where you'll really make the property your own.

I personally think the cladding would look nice and be the easiest to maintain. We also live on the Gold Coast and have a brick house that has been rendered (not by us) and, to be honest, it is not particularly low maintenance (if you want it to stay looking good that is). It is prone to leaching which leaves ugly stains so regularly needs retouching with the paintbrush. It can also develop small cracks in the render due to temperature change and movement. However, the most worrying thing for us is with regards to termites. If you render over your brick on the lower half of your house, it is highly unlikely you will see the telltale "mud" they leave that indicates they are trying to gain access into your house (they climb up in between the render and the brickwork). I would be trying to keep the exposed bricks in preference to rendering over them, particularly if you have a garden bed up against the house anywhere.

Just a thought - Have you tested the existing cladding for asbestos prior to removing? Some of my coastal clients also feel the need to 'fill' the corrugations at the ends prior to capping or butting up to end frames: to dissuade small creatures from also moving in to a nice new home. Colorbond Surfmist will look great and horizontal will help to balance your homes height, however, it also gives ridges where dust and dirt sits and so needs to be hosed down more often - probably a good idea as it removes some of the salt as well. Yes, you can still achieve a retro look with modern products. There are a lot of wall panels for bathrooms on the market. And wood or wood veneer wall lining for other rooms. For example, Bunnings have lining boards in a variety of wood looks. Both in a gloss or matt. They are around 9-10mm thickness. http://www.bunnings.com.au/cedar-gloss-lining-board-90-x-9mm-x-3-6m-glosswood-10-pack_p0071387 I believe the board you're thinking of was wood veneer that was quite popular in the 70's and was thinner. I think it still can be found but not sure if in the quantity you would need.

Hi! We had something similar installed on the front of our west facing weatherboard in Melbourne some years ago. We havent got around to cladding the underside yet, and it is just as well as there is some water getting trapped somehow in join with roof - just random drips here and there. So if we had installed lining boards straight away they would be ruined now... Cement sheeting is probably the most sturdy and economic option, but there are some great timber like finishes out there as well (not so economical but definitely add wow factor). If it is possible, my advice is to build main structure first then see what the impact of the space is before deciding on cladding on underside. Good luck!

thanks! I have been looking at those but wondered if I was being too boring. Would it be too much to do some sort of feature timber for the front door section - its hard to see in the photo's but it juts in approx 1m in the middle of the house.

I agree with sticking with the weatherboard look.

Does local council have any guidance on appropriate materials to use in regards to fire ratings?

Not that I can find. The house is a mid 80's build and a little 'handyman' in parts - it is a bit off being compliant with building reg's let along fire rating. We will aim to correct as much as we can as we go along. Cement sheet products would be fine as a timber alternative I think.
