Help! Need to paint render, but what color?
Comments (12)Go grey as advised above, don't paint window frames if they are metal but leave alone, plant sasanqua camelias along the side boundaries (they can be hedged) to screen out neighbours & add greenery plus colour, landscape the front. Don't do white stones as they look dirty after a while and are blinding in the sun. I'd get rid of the stones altogether. If you are a gardener, put in box hedging and some standard roses (yes, I know done to death but they are charming), or draw up something on paper first - play with shapes. Comments (5)Plaster damage like yours is most often caused by insufficient or damaged / bridges damp proof course around the perimeter of the external walls.Damp is wicking up the walls. The damp proof course can be a slate layer placed between the lower brick courses in older homes , or more common ( and better ) , a strip of thick black plastic placed between the lower brick courses to stop the damp from entering the wall. The damp mortar is is raked out and the plastic inserted a section at a time , and the brick joint is re - pointed with fresh new mortar. No simple/quick fix I`m afraid....See MoreHelp! Comments (48)If you want to make the house hotter, then painting the roof charcoal will certainly achieve that. Repointing the brickwork is the most sensible from a maintenance perspective. Once you render and paint, then you have to keep painting (and it's likely to be out of fashion sooner or later). Try to keep passive cooling in mind (i.e. light colours & permeable landscaping) with any of your renovations, and I think it always pays to try and embrace and compliment the original architecture and be unique, rather than trying to look like the latest project home. Comments (5)Thank you Dreamer, Sadly, it's the wall that is curved. The ledge going down has been packed to start the curve at the ends.. We've knocked out the wall between the kitchen and family and straighten up the other kitchen wall. knocked back the wall between the entry and dining... Not sure who lost the bet when the house was built - the store in the kitchen housed the hot water system and the linen cupboard was 25cm deep!...See More

Hi Michelle,We finished our renos 18 months ago and still love everything about our colour scheme. Similar roof colour and teamed it with Duck White as it dosent throw to yellows or pinks. We had to comply to 6 star energy ratings as we added on so chose aluminum coloured double glazed windows in the hopper style as all our wind comes to the front of the house. I find the dark roof seems to hug the whole house and makes it very welcoming we have teamed with matching fences and given it a pop with wood and native grasses and magnolias.

PRO10 years agoBe aware that ordinary render on the brick fence and below the damp proof course (DPC) will absorb rising damp and ground salts that can cause blistering and spalling within a few years. A water repellent additive should be included in your render mix to prevent that problem so that you only do it once. The photos below are examples of rising damp and salt attack.
