Thanks all. I love Cool, Calm, Collected - it's only a suburb away from where I live... their prices are normally $$$, but they have beautiful stuff. I actually already have that West Elm light fitting in my stair case! (How embarrassing) - I love it (and they actually have it in brass in the USA but not here). Whoever suggested light in the box, thanks, I don't think I've seen that site before. No down lights in bedrooms. A central pendant fitting with LED bulb, or a central fan with light. Then bedside table lamps. lounge and living spaces- depends on the size of the rooms. In my opinion there is nothing worse than a runway of lights in the ceiling. A central pendant, or two matching pendants, if a long room, always looks the best, in an older home. You could then bring in floor light stands, that will also add to the character of the space. Or a trio of lights in the corner of the room, if space is available. An abundance of down lights, in my opinion, would not look the best. Remember for energy efficiency use LED bulbs.

I would definitely remove the animal on the floor and cushions. And the Italian pedestal and floral display. Try the deer print on the black wall in the lounge area. Try it on the right hand side of wall at eye level, after you take the pedestal away. Put your tall table decoration onto the white buffet, where the deer was. Can you remove the shiny light fittings that are in the dining room space. They seem not to work. Install led down lights. As the existing lights seem not to be where you have your table. This is my opinion. Everyone's tastes are different.

Thank you for your responses. Both areas are separated by a bulk head in the kitchen with the kitchen light a bit hidden by it. The dilema is that the dinning have traditional beige courtains with rectangular palmets and there is nothing black on it should i choose something that matches the color of the kitchen which is predominately black and beige or  something that matches the colours of dining wich are beige with the same colour of the wood as the shutters in the kitchen ( honey colur).
