Courtyard ideas please

I have a lovely deck which adjoins my villa at floor level however it doesn't feel quite right. The reason is that the land slopes away towards the back and the height between the deck level and the yard level feels too great. The obvious fix to feel secure is to put a railing around the deck however I don't want to close it in. The other option is to build the yard up.

The down side building ground up is that the golden canes which provide amazing screening from the units over the back will apparently die if the soil is built up around them. Is this right?

The other dilemma with this area is that the golden canes also cast a shadow over the lawn and therefore it has died. I'd like lawn to grow there but I'm guessing I can't have everything.

Please, does anyone have any solutions?

Location: Inner city Brisbane

Yellow line distance - deck to back fence is approx 4 metres

Orange line - top of deck to ground is around 84 cm

Purple line is to general indicate the distance between the deck and the ground.
