I do like the red but worried I'd get sick of it after awhile! Might go for something light and brighten it up with accessories

There's a beautiful pale blue Moroccan textured tile called Patchwork Sky. It may be a good option for both. When my husband saw it he said it was like the funky printed lining of a very formal business shirt when you fold the cuffs back! (It comes in charcoal too).

You need some warmth so would maybe add texture and or pattern. Mosaics or an artisan tile.

If you like change regularly get a clear glass splash back that you paint behind. That way you can change the colour whenever you feel like a change.

I tend to agree with your husband too, the long scullery however will be sensitive to too much bold colour.

You can do both rooms the same colour, but in different ways. pick a colour you like, not a pastel but a saturate colour, match it to the floor. With out seeing the floor, a burnt orange, a deep green, or even a dark purple leaning to the grey Delete repeated word

Paint the wall where you want the splash back to be, can be the whole wall if you like. Matte or semi gloss, but make it kitchen/bathroom paint.

Cover this with glass. Now here is where you control the outcome. but will be dependant on budget and availability.

Use a frosted glass, the amount of frosting will determine how much colour comes through. Also the grain of the frosting will change the effect. If your up for it you can have an image printed into the frosting, I like natural flow images, something like branches, field of tall flowers, waves, these give a none repetitive image which reduces the "boredom" factor and actually changes as you move around the room. In the Scullery, use a heavy frosting to subdue the colour more.

To select the splashback glass, get a board (I use MDF) and a sample pot of your paint, paint the board, don't make it too small, and take it with you, and try with the glass. You can even take a few different options to see what you like the best.

I like the glass splashback, as its easy to keep clean, and that is what they are about.

Every one talks about being able to change the colour behind a glass splash back but how does this work? I'm pretty sure mine would break if I tried to get it off the wall (it was installed by the previous owner and looks very blue where as every thing else in the house including the floors are in warm tones.). I love the idea of being able to decorate behind and then change it if you change your mind but have no idea how this would work in practice.

Having never had to remove and replace a glass splash back before, I can't say for sure. I leave that to installation experts. They do tell me it can be done, but it need to be made clear before installation, so it is fixed a certain way. But there are no guarantees

I agree with Flair 4 Interiors. Use a tile with some personality. In my opinion glass would look very bland.

What are you doing with the floors?

I'm another vote for tiles. It needs some texture and interest.

Having had glass several times in different kitchens (currently smoked mirror glass)- both times the glass itself was spray painted, not the wall. This rather thick, tempered glass (read as- "heavy") is then epoxy glued to the wall.

This area needs texture! Try a textured tile, whites (then add colour with accessories) or a pastel aqua, yellow to brighten or some other colour that is not too "in your face". Remember that you have to live with it 24/7

Mist is a color I would chose.

You could go a subway tile or pattern like this...

I love tiles!! So much more modern and interesting than glass. I'm going with white hexagon and a light grey grout. But my area is small. If it were bigger, I'd love to do a coloured hexagon. Post some pics when you're done. :-)

christine, its a nartow space. anything in a bright warm hue will advance. green is a receeding colour so find a splashback that has this same hue, lighter ir darker or noth that ALSO has your floor colour in it. Its a matter if uniting your existing colours. the larger the shspes in your spashback the more they'll advance, so ensure your shapes are small.
One of designers gand paints tiles (see pic) and I'm getting into hand painted glass splashbacks. if you get stuck there are lots of people who can create bespoke work that value ads to your home..

Hi Lyndsey, My suggestion is to keep it grey or white tiles.... preferably with some texture to make it interesting. I am not a fan of glass as I feel it has no character.

Well for what it's worth........

Find a company that does glass Splashbacks (Here in Auckland United Glass - formerly Winstone Glass). Choose a company that uses glasskote technology.

The above company will print any photo you bring in onto a splashback, although there probably has to be resolution requirements, or they will coat in ANY Resene colour, which gives you plenty of options (Sorry, not sure if Resene in Aus). But ask the questions before deciding.

I've seen plenty of their work, amazing and easy as hell to keep clean, no worries about tired old grout getting splashed with cooking spills etc.

Hmmmmm......judging from the amount of space you have, I would go out on a whim and try tinted mirror look. It will enlarge the space and instantly have a focal point as well. I know that your husband said something bold, but by going with mirror, I personally you add a touch of modern class to the space! Hope this will help! :-)

Just remember with tiles, esp small ones with lots of grout, it will be a greasy cleaning NIGHTMARE behind the cooktop!
...so what about tiles with clear glass panel over the top! Best of both worlds!!

Oh, forgot to add...........If you painted / wallpapered then put clear glass on top, if adhered/glued, there is no guarantee the glass will come off in one piece.

However I have a friend who wallpapered, then put clear glass that was fixed on the corners with bolts (can't think of the word), so that it was removable.

You can probably get a tiled look paper. Each to their own.

I'd stick with a painted glass splashback.

I'm now doing hand painted splashbacks for kitchens if you want something arty and meaningful tailored to the finishes.

What about this mirrored tile look- adds light and space with reflection and you can always add pops of colour with other display items, bowls, bottles- one week a pop of blue, other week red and such. Hope this helps.

You can actually get glass splashback using an image of your choice too nowadays. Something unique to you and your husband. Just imagine all those black joineries are white. Another idea.

There are so may amazing tiles in beautiful colours and textures on the market. I suggest making your selection in the context of the aesthetic of your whole home, and especially in the context of the spaces that are in immediate view of the kitchen. 'angiejane' has provided some lovely images of splashback tiles and they will work well if it is a congruent fit with the decor of the rest of your home. All the best!

When we were building our home I thought about a clear glass splash back that had the ability for me to change the design/colour/ image that you slide in and out when you feel like a change. No ones invented that I don't think but it's something I would like since I'm forever changing colour schemes in my house for a change. There's a business idea! Hehe...
